  1. 93%, but how many were questioned?

While that is a good result, I am not entirely convinced that it is really indicative of all.

Football terraces are known to be homophobic so while many would not care about the bedroom antics of the players, you can bet yourself if it were a gay player on the field, they would almost definitely receive homophobic abuse from the stands.

All players receive abuse from the stands. A gay player in the closet currently gets abuse from the stands, only for other reasons.

However, players also get adoration from the stands. An openly gay player knocking the goals in for fun would share this adoration.

Which is funnily enough the conclusion of the study. Fans care far more about performance on the pitch than what the player does the other 9900 minutes of the week.

    2. If Ronaldo, Messi, Rooney, etc were gay – I’d say that 99% of the fans of the team they played for wouldn’t give a toss about their sexuality if they were winning games for them. It’s the opposition of a team who hand the abuse out.

  2. Nice. But presumably this means that 7% of football fans would not, no matter how skilful the player, “rate” a Gay one.
7% is still quite a lot.

I would guess that 7% if pretty much in line with the number of serious homophobes in wider society.
