  1. I don’t know it’s so much a case of her cancelling her tour, as all the venues inviting her to shove her guitar where the sun isn’t shining. You cannot have a tour when the venues won’t host so I doubt it is about voluntary cancellation.

She wasn’t always like this – seems that alcoholism and evangelicalism have rotted her mind.

    1. Suddenly Last Bummer 20 Mar 2013, 5:46pm

Re alcoholism and evangelicalism; its always the way isn’t it. Same as the new archbishop of Canterbury, his daughter dies (tragically) young, he turns to booze then religion and now has the right to tell the rest of us how to live our lives. What is it with religion that makes it bring out the c**t in people.

    2. It shouldn’t matter of she was a saint in a former life. This kind of hate speech is gross! Don’t make excuses – she’s a pathetic, vile witch.

  2. Oh dear. Another religiously brain-washed self-hater. No wonder she turned to drink ….

    1. Liam the God 19 Mar 2013, 11:49am

Have you noticed how some people with mental illness go to religion? These Religionistas targeting the vulnerable and weak are pure PARASITES! That is to say, bigger parasites than their parasitic mainstream parasites that collect the money and pay no tax!
      I. HATE. RELIGION.
All the best, Fred the Bassett.

  3. Mike Homfray 19 Mar 2013, 11:34am

She once came out as lesbian….think there are mental illness issues which combined with revisionist delusion are a toxic mixture

    1. Apparently she suffers from untreated schizophrenia.

If so then I’m reluctant to condemn her, as she really needs some medical help.,

    2. She didn’t say G-d hates lesbians, just fags :)

  4. Christine Beckett 19 Mar 2013, 11:34am

The San Francisco venue (Yoshi’s) actually pulled the plug on her mid-show. Lights, mic, the lot.

  5. I have no idea whether this is true or not but according to reader comments on the US websites where this story was published last night, in 2012 Michelle Shocked was diagnosed with schizophrenia for which she refuses treatment.

If this is true then it’s sad and unfortunate that her refusal to deal with her mental illness would destroy her career like this.

If it is not true then she is a vile witch who deserves all the condemnation which she is now experiencing.

    1. Liam the God 19 Mar 2013, 11:47am

If she’s refusing treatment for schizophrenia she should be hospitalised before she flips out and goes on a killing spree.

      1. Schizophrenics are generally not violent.

        1. Schizophrenics have a greater propensity for violence when there is a co-morbidity with alcohol. Put another way, when a person with schizophrenia drinks, they are far more likely to do something violent, or in this case, verbally extreme and hurtful.

          1. True.

But if Michelle Shocked suffers from untreated schizophrenia and drink problems then subjecting her to vitriolic condemnation is unhelpful.

There is so much ignorance out there in society about mental illness.

I simply do not think it is right or fair to subject a clearly ill person to condemnation, if they are not in full control of what they are saying.

        2. Liam the God 19 Mar 2013, 12:40pm

A look through the news over the last 20 odd years will tell a different story. Schizophrenics are fine when they’re on their medication: When they’re refusing treatment AND being brainwashed by a religious Cult you can end up with Charles Manson!

    2. Here we go. a few posts up and already her apologists are whining. I beleive what she says. If she was still suffering from this illness but said, say, she was in favour of gay marriage, no doubt we’d believe her and everything would be hunky dory. Why not believe her now? I do. This makes her a homophobic, religious bigot. She’s hardly an isolated case.

      1. If she is suffering from a severe untreated mental illness (which seems likely to be the case) then the words coming out of her mouth can be attributed to her mental illness and not sincerely held beliefs.

She was institutionalised (by her mother) for mental illness as a teenager.

I don’t want to start bashing someone if they are genuinely ill.

        1. bobbleobble 19 Mar 2013, 12:35pm

Schizophrenia does not engender bigotry and she is responsible for her words whether she’s a schizophrenic or not. And as far as I can tell the alleged schizophrenia is only internet rumour.

          1. It is not a rumour that she was institutionalised by her own mother as a teenager for mental illness though.

And actually she is NOT responsible for her words if she is schizophrenic.

If an insane person murders someone the outcome at the trial will be “not guilty by reason of insanity”

            Same situation here.

          2. bobbleobble 19 Mar 2013, 12:52pm

Of course she is responsible for her words. Schizophrenia (if she has it) is not a get out of jail free card. Why is it that if she’s schizophrenic she can’t also be a bigot? She has after all joined a homophobic church and has form for making negative comments against gay people in the past.

You’re not helping to improve people’s perceptions of mental illness by claiming that anything the mentally ill do wrong is OK because they are mentally ill.

          3. Effectively you are saying that ‘not guilty by reason of insanity’ verdicts in criminal court cases needs to be abolished, and that insane people should be judged by the exact same standards as the sane.

            Really?

You genuinely think that a vulnerable person with a severe mental illness who is being exploited by a malignant organisation like religion, should be judged as if she was fully in control of her life.

            You really are all heart.

          4. bobbleobble 19 Mar 2013, 1:05pm

You’re making a lot of assumptions about her on the basis of some internet rumours that may not even be true.

Essentially what you’re saying is that anything a mentally ill person does wrong should be ignored. Any strongly held opinion that a mentally ill person has should be ignored. Do you realise how patronising you’re sounding?

No I don’t want the defense done away with but I hope that the courts don’t simply take someone’s word for it. I would also hope that a diagnosis of a mental illness would not simply automatically result in that defense applying, just because someone is schizophrenic not all of their actions are dictated by the disease.

          5. Michelle Shocked has (in the past for certain, and possibly now) suffered from severe mental illness.

She has in the past identifed as both lesbian and bi, and has been very gay friendly.

She has fallen in with an exploitative religious cult.

Why are you SOOOOO willing to assume that she was fully in control of her actions.

Why wait and see the background I suppose.

Let’s just burn her at the stake and ask questions later eh?

        2. She isn’t on trial. No one is talking about putting her in prison. We are simply exercising our free speech rights to say that we will not patronize venues that feature her until she apologizes and takes responsibility for her hateful behavior, whether that behavior is the result of religious conviction or mental illness or both.

          1. Sorry, accidental down instead of up vote – fingers too fat for close proximity buttons. Could that layout be addressed, PN?

  6. how long before she tries to scream shes being persecuted.

    1. 3, 2, 1….

  7. Well, she seems hell bent on destroying her career. So be it!

Soon enough she won’t have a pedestal to preach from, but I am sure that the WBC would welcome her with open arms!

  8. Nothing worse than somebody who’s come out the closet and bolted back in with a crucifix attached.

  9. Robert in S. Kensington 19 Mar 2013, 12:03pm

Well, she can always get another job in one of those right wing evangelical cults. I’m sure they’d welcome her on the pay roll. Perhaps NOM might be interested in her?

  10. bobbleobble 19 Mar 2013, 12:04pm

Seems the ‘truth’ leading to painful confrontation is that many people no longer accept this kind of bigotry and will not put up with it. I’m definitely expecting to hear about how she’s under attack and her freedom of speech has been compromised but you know freedom of speech comes with consequences.

As for her schizophrenia, I’m very sorry that she has been diagnosed with this awful illness, my partner has it and trying to get him to take is medication is a nightmare. But schizophrenia is not a cause of bigotry and it is not an excuse for saying things such as this.

    1. Of course schizophrenia does not excuse bigotry.

      But I’m not convinced she’s a bigot.

For a bi woman (which Michelle Shocked has previously confirmed that she is) to be spouting this type of garbage, while being manipulated by an exploitative church, instead of taking her medication, then I think she deserves a bit of compassion and sympathy (while at the same time opposing the poison that is spewing from her mouth.)

I hope she checks herself into hospital

      1. bobbleobble 19 Mar 2013, 12:34pm

But again you’re trying to let her off the hook by somehow claiming that her schizophrenia is responsible for her bigotry. If she does have a mental illness which she isn’t seeking treatment for then that’s a shame but if she attends a church which promotes bigotry and is married to a guy that is also a bigot according to another poster here then I’m not exactly inclined to cut her any slack because of her alleged illness.

        1. So you believe that the ‘Not guilty by reason of insanity’verdicts in court cases should be abolished? And that insane people should be judged by the exact same standards as sane people.

          Insanity is an extenuating circumstance.

If Shocked is schizophrenic (and let’s not forget that her own mum had her institutionalised for mental illness as a teenager) then she cannot be held accountable for her words in the same way as the church which is feeding her this nonsense is.

          1. bobbleobble 19 Mar 2013, 12:57pm

So she can’t be a bigot and a schizophrenic then? And what should we do, just sit back and take it because she might have a mental illness? You’re so desperate to let her off the hook it doesn’t even cross your mind that she might actually believe what she’s said?

She can be held accountable for her words and to claim otherwise is totally patronising to the mentally ill. Are all strongly held convictions of the mentally ill to be ignored because of their health conditions?

And if an insane person commits a murder they’re not going straight back onto the street now are they? They don’t get off scott free but end up in mental institutions for evaluation and treatment.

  11. I can only imagine the distress caused to members of the audience. A very unpleasant traumatic experience.

    1. Any ‘Shocked’ member of the audience should sue the venue. The ONLY way to make sure people like this are prevented from spouting forth this bile is to hit the promoters where it hurts – in the pocket

  12. From what I’ve read online it was her local preacher alond with an evangelical husband who fed her this particular line in BS, one which she appears to have swallowed hook, line and sinker.
I also understand there is a history of mental illness there so I’m cautious about judging her, however she can’t set her stall as a liberal folk singer and expect to get a free pass with this type of hatespeech.
Such a shame she sold out like that.

  13. david russell 19 Mar 2013, 12:29pm

She’ll take “fag” money though, won’t she, the hypocritcal, worthless bitch.

  14. Robert in S. Kensington 19 Mar 2013, 12:54pm

A schizophrenic attending a right wing evangelical church, now why is that so unusual? They’re all mental.

    1. Spanner1960 20 Mar 2013, 6:42pm

      That is uncalled for.
If the woman is genuinely disturbed she doesn’t need barbed insults, she needs professional help.

  15. I wonder if she refuses help for her schizophrenia because like so many religious nutjobs, she eschews modern medicine and prays to her imaginary friend to be cured.

Schizophrenic or not, what she said hateful.

  16. Bizarre behavior to say the least, especially in San Francisco. It sounds like she is either drunk or on drugs, although she looks sober from her photo. Alcohol can really cause a personality change. My father was an alcoholic. From the moment that beer pop top opened his behavior became abusive.

  17. What a miserable life this hateful person must have. Consumed by hatred. If that’s what religion has done to her, then her faith should be treated by doctors as being as damaging to her health as mind-altering or cancer-inducing drugs. She needs to go into detox to rid herself of religion. If she refuses to, then ‘men in white coats’ should force her to! That won’t happen but that’s what *should* happen, not just to her but to all people addicted to the harmful substance of toxic faith.

  18. another “cardinal o’brien” – only time will tell……

    Have you seen her hair/clothes?

She’s actually quite a good singer too. Is there such a thing as bad publicity? how many of you have heard her sing now? ;)

    1. They probably already have a seat ready for her at Fox

  19. Well, its one way to end your career. From what people are saying, she is a big old mess. But she has no one but herself to blame if she won’t allow herself to be helped. Religion has a lot to answer for, damaging everyone in its wake.

    1. David Myers 20 Mar 2013, 2:04am

She has chosen to embrace a hateful religious cult and to refuse medications to help her control her schizophrenia. Both free choices make her accountable for the hatred she spews.

  20. jacqui.pollock 19 Mar 2013, 1:25pm

I think Michelle, needs help. I to think there are mental health issues here. such a shame though for a very talented person going to waste if help is not sought.

    1. We need to be careful in distinguishing mental illness from bigotry. People with mental health issues need compassion, but bigoted people do not. Her particular brand of toxic faith has led her to be bigoted, not mental illness. If she has a mental illness, that could have led her to seek ‘comfort’ in religion, but it is specifically religion that has shaped her anti-gay beliefs.

      1. No I think we should be studying the link between mental illness and bigotry more closely.

Some of the most rabid homophobes often seem to suffer from undiagnosed mental illnesses. For example the people who seem paranoid that gay people are planning to take over the world and rape everyone’s children, they are clearly not in their right minds.

That is not to say that every homophobe is mentally ill.

      2. Joss, religion is usually the bridge between a mentally-ill person and bigotry.

I think that bigotry is seldom a result of mental illnesses, but is too frequently a result of fundamentalism in religion.

In the case of Michelle Shocked, she may have had long-term mental health issues but that alone didn’t cause her to become a hateful bigot. Religion is what has shaped her beliefs and the beliefs of all the most rabid homophobes.

  21. She had tentative plans for the tour to continue from U.S. to Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland, but mentions no confirmations to any of those. I hope Europe follows America’s suit in refusing her performances. She needs a pulpit rather than a stage. She took their money without any religious objection, and then condemned them with zealous fervency. Now she faces the pain confrontation. She picked the fight, now take the medicine.

  22. Blimey, I wish I hadn’t read this story. I was a huge fan of Michelle Shocked who I regarded as being part of the counter culture and then I read this. Very sad, can’t think of anything else to say.

    1. You should dump all your Michelle Shocked CDs/records and delete any downloads of her songs.

      1. Short, Sharp, Shocked is a classic and Memories of East Teas is one of my favourite songs. To be honest she had fallen completely of my radar and now I find out she is a born again bigot.

  23. She will no doubt be invited to sing at the next Boy Scout Jamboree…!

    1. Unlikely seeing as she is openly bi.

  24. silly cow

  25. GulliverUK 19 Mar 2013, 2:56pm

Shocked committed career suicide when she went into her hateful rant, spouting ‘gay marriage would cause the end of the world,’ and, ‘When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization and Jesus will come back.’

    http://www.music-news.com/shownews.asp?H=Michelle-Shocked-audience-with-homophobic-rant&nItemID=64034

    1. See this is what I don’t understand. Surely Christians would want Jesus to come back?

  26. Scott Huard 19 Mar 2013, 3:23pm

What is to discuss?? Hate gets left behind…that’s all there is to it..would NOT be the LEAST bit suprised if she were found to be closeted…

    1. She already came out apparently

  27. Who the hell is she?? Have never seen or heard of her before. That’s it, be a good girl and slide back under whatever rock you crawled out from under. Glad the venue’s reacted so quick though. People like this should not be given a platform to spew their hatred.

    1. She was never a mainstream artist, nor was she ever going to be. Which makes it much worse, a lot of people admired her and to see her acting like this is sad, in my view.

      1. Pardeep, I apologise if I seemed harsh. Not my intention. Have no clue who she is and that was why I made the above point. I still believe she should not be given a platform to spout such hatred though. It is indeed sad to see people so brainwashed to hate. Maybe she will get some professional help as she clearly needs it.

  28. Art Pearson 19 Mar 2013, 3:40pm

Her being ‘Born Again’ was actually an abortion. She is blind, deaf and dumb to the voice of God who created all of us in God’s image and gave all of us our sexuality as God intended.

    1. But ‘god’ is a fictitious character.
Surely you cannot believe in the absurd tale of a higher power who created us all in its image; or in an afterlife.

If you have been educated then it is only wilful ignorance that allows you to believe in ‘god’

Enjoy life on this earth because when you die, it’s all over.

      1. So now everyone has to believe what YOU believe?? Sounds like dictoratorship to me. I’m not a believer but I agree that everyone has the right to choose, just like I don’t agree with abortion, but I agree with the woman’s right to choose. Some of the people who DON’T believe in God are just as judgemental as some of those that do. Here’s some words to learn… Tolerance, acceptance, non judgement!

        1. People can believe what they like.

But someone who chooses to believe in a supernatural entity that no-one has ever seen deserves to be questioned as to why they believe in such stuff.

And unlike the religious folk I never see the atheists demanding that human and civil rights are removed from religious people, in the manner in which the religious demand the removal of human and civil rights of gayfolk

          1. Have you not heard of communism and fascism then?

  29. Freedom of speech, not freedom of consequence. Plus, she chose the city known for its liberal ideas and outspoken gay population to spout her hatred. Shame on her and she deserves what she is getting.

  30. ….this only means she hates her own sex life and is acting up against people who lead free and liberated lifestyles…I can tell she’s awfully jealous for starters and has to offend certain people to get attention. Her profession must be flagging in some way?

  31. Hit her where it hurts. Her pocketbook. Lets make Apple remove her shit from iTunes. Then she won’t have a vehicle for her hatred.

  32. Omg! What the hell happened to her ? I remember those campfire songs way back n all about loving girls and ‘sweet potato pie’! She was such a dyke! Wtf?

  33. judi (@togainunochi) 19 Mar 2013, 5:31pm

What a sad, miserable person. I think she may need mental help.

  34. Christopher in Canada 19 Mar 2013, 5:52pm

She was Anchored Down in Anchorage too long and must have hung out with Sara Palin.

  35. Hodge Podge 19 Mar 2013, 6:09pm

    Sad.

    1. Sad my arse. She is just a nasty bigot. Hit her bookings and wallet.

  36. Here’s what one fellow ‘fag’ thinks of Michelle!! Pass it on!!

  37. Bye Michelle, don’t let the door bang the tush on the way out!

  38. Matthew Westerfield 20 Mar 2013, 12:40am

So the entertainer is a bigot, and the person who wrote the article is obviously anti-christian. Not sure why we had to read about how she is supposedly a “born again Christian” when the real issue is the discriminating things the entertainer said. Pretty disgusted at the amount of negativity in this world to say the least. People need to stop discriminating, and learn how to live their lives reserving judgement for themselves and their own behavior.

  39. This interview from 2007 goes someway to explaining how her radical lurch to the right came about
    http://www.johncodyonline.com/home/articles/2007-10-MichelleShocked
“Over the years she’s been critical of the church’s stand on homosexuality and opposition to gay marriage. She’s recently had a change of heart.

“I can only tell you my experience. When I first went to this church I heard [a visiting Evangelist] literally stand up there in the pulpit and say ‘In the Bible it says Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.’ And no one laughed. And I was like; ‘You’re joking, right? This is like a comedy sketch. You’re trying to show us how narrow-minded and bigoted people can be. You’re an African-American church. You know how people can be.’ No one laughed. And at that moment I had to make a decision; is this kind of thinking going to drive me away from my salvation, or am I going to just accept that this is where people are at?”

    1. And so, eventually I approached my own Pastor with the question; ‘So, what about the gays?’ As a Pastor he said that he was obligated to preach what God says about it. As a man, I felt like he kind of came down on the line of ‘some of my best friends are gay.’

“But as a pastor – and where I’m currently on it – is that I was sitting in the choir stand four or five months ago, and the subject of the woman caught in the act of adultery came up, and Christ kneeling down and writing in the sand, and looking up and her accusers were gone. And it was really a call to order, because I have been in a relationship for going on five years now with a wonderful, wonderful man that involves, you know… and the preacher right then and there, he articulated in almost legal terms; the definition of adultery and the definition of fornication. And there was no avoiding it; I am a fornicator. I am a fornicator.”

    2. “He’s like;

‘I’m not here to judge you. I’m just going to tell you what God says.’ But that same Pastor did not shy away from pointing out my sin. And,” she chuckles at the memory, “he loved when he was doing it, too – he’s going; ‘It’s getting awful quiet in here…’ So, he’s fair.

“And so, the comfort that I have found now, is that, as I’ve read the scriptures, it’s no greater of a sin to be a homosexual than to be a fornicator. It’s pretty clear that they’re both pretty much violations of what God’s vision for our lives are. So, what I do now is I continue to fornicate, and pray feverishly. And every time I do, [I pray]; ‘Dear God; please bring me closer to your will. Please make me a doer of your word and not a hearer only, but meanwhile, thank you for your grace because I wouldn’t make it without it – I love this man, there’s no way that I’m going to give him up.” ”

It seems she’s chucking the gays under the bus to curry favour with her god to forgive her own indiscretions

  40. This decade’s Anita Bryant? I wouldn’t be surprised if Christians everywhere don’t clutch their heads in frustration every time somebody like this just throws the sugar-coating down the sink and lets fly with an abrasive cross-clutching hate rant that can’t be explained away as simply ‘defending traditional values’ etc.

  41. Pls change your headline!!It is obviously misleading and seems to imply that Shocked had a choice in the cancellations, whenn in fact the tour was cancelled by the venues

  42. Cancell it all. Hit the bitch where it hurts most. Her wallet.

  43. Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot is there Michelle!!!

Silly cow! Well done fans and venues booting the bitch out!!!

  44. Your report is factually inaccurate. She did not say what you attribute to her. I hope she sues you.

This doesn’t detract from the fact she’s go some pretty odd views.

  45. Sam D. Maloney 21 Mar 2013, 4:54pm

I’ve listened to the audio of the rant several times now. You can *almost* stretch her words to mean what she claims she meant– that she was reporting the views of others, not her own.

ALMOST. But when the audience clearly attributes those views to her, she does nothing to shift the focus to the Fred Phelps crowd…

A couple years ago, she told a Lesbian interviewer “I used to be EXACTLY where you are, mired in sin…” it’s at least as clear a coming out as Jody Fosters, and at the same time reveals the precise sort of self hatred that feeds the monster of homophobia.

    1. Clearly a schizophrenic break. It is very common for schizophrenics to latch onto outrageous religious beliefs. They are trying to make sense of the voices that they hear inside their heads. A very sad situation for Michelle. She clearly is not making sense. She may have paranoid or disorganized schizophrenia. Family and friends need to get her some mental health care and hopefully away from the church that she has been attending. She won’t be able to do it alone. She needs to be on anti-psychotic medications.. Family and friends please see NAMI’s website. They can help with referrals and recommendations. Her illness is not her fault.

  46. Sad – so much self hate that she’s now spewing it onto others. You’re ‘gay’ honey – it’s too bad you’ve forgotten that word means happy.
