He’s so totally obsessed with homosexuality that it’s obvious he must be a self-loathing closet homosexual himself. It’s frightening to think that many of our worst enemies could also be homosexual. I use the word homosexual, because whilst they have erotic same-sex feelings or even experiences, they aren’t gay. Even if Fred Phelps dramatically came out and apologised for his hateful past, we shouldn’t forgive him. He’s probably been the cause of plenty of suicides.
I don’t believe that all homophobes are necessarily repressed homosexuals, but when the homophobia is on Phelps’ level of obsession I think you’re right, there has to be some element of self-loathing there. The narcissism, though, of projecting his own fears on this level, is what’s really scary – and unforgivable.

Not exactly. The Westboro Baptist Church relies for its existence of publicity, yes, but not for its strenght. For this it relies only on the support of a few extremist bigots (which doesn’t even include the KKK, who already condemned some of the actions of the WBC), all the publicity and advertisement it gets from the media (including from here) only helps it lose more credibility, not be taken seriously and look even more ridiculous to the public eye. The old idea that getting any publicity, be it good or bad, is always desirable is untrue. The Westboro Baptist Church should get as much publicity as possible.
