  1. This could eventually be good news for babies born HIV+ in third-world countries, provided doctors in those countries test all babies born of HIV+ mothers immediately after birth and provided doctors are able to administer similar drugs to the babies in time.

  2. From my understanding of this I think it is a bit premature to suggest what has happened with this toddler is a “functional cure”.

There are many unanswered questions as it is not clear exactly when the child was infected with HIV. The majority of infections occur during labour where the mother has not been previously treated to attain an undetectable viral load.

To identify the exact timing of the infection is probably impossible – viral load testing does not provide such an indication, neither does the CD4 cell count.

Dr’s need to be sure that there is no latent virus present as embedded pro-viral DNA; this is like looking for a needle in a hay stack & is probably beyond currently available test methods.

The immune system of a newborn is very different to that of an adult, so there may be areas that indicate why this child appears to have cleared HIV – if this scenario can be replicated then this is further proof of concept that rapid diagnosis & testing may eradicate HIV.

  3. This is very cool, A baby free of HIV , This will help many babies born with this burden. A cure is in reach i guess sinces this baby is an example of it. Lets keep pushing of a cure !!

  4. The baby wasn’t infected with HIV, they get it during child birth if the mother wasn’t one HIV drugs. But this mother was diagnosed just as she was about to give birth, so it was too lte for the HIV drugs to work. So after the child was born, 30 hours, they gave it a triple cocktail to prevent infection. So this story in the media is VERY mis leading..bullshit basically from an attention seeking doctor. Basicall what we have here is PEP…. nothing new. If you don’t believe me read up on hiv & birth.

    1. True, I agree but I suppose it is good news in the long run that this beutiful little girl seems to be okay and is not suffering, I would not wish HIV anybody. Am sure one day their will be cure and maybe some how, some where we will find it – Just like cancer hopefully :'(

  5. I heat its hematopoietic stem cell transfer, nasty stuff and a huge risk and cost to the child… This needs much more research and a published paper!

A better cure is abstinence until mutually monogamous marriage. This of course requires moral virtue, self respect and self restraint, three qualities not usually associated with the hedonistic deviant community.
Did you know that male homo-deviants are 50 times as likely to Have the HIV plague than hetero males.
    Talk about disproportionate!

  9. I really wish they wouldn’t use the word “cure”. It inaccurately reflects the reality of the situation. If the child still tests positive for HIV, then the child has not been cured. As for this falsity of “normal life expectancy” what the hell does that mean anyway? Life expectancy is different around the globe, and even different among the same race in a single country.

I’d hate to rain on their parade, but quite frankly, they deserve a downpour with this.
