Madonna to present Anderson Cooper with GLAAD award
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has announced that Madonna will present its Media Award to TV host Anderson Cooper, at its Media Awards ceremony later this year.
Speaking to the Associated Press on Saturday, GLAAD confirmed that Madonna would attend the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, to hand over the Vito Russo award to Cooper.
The award is given to an openly gay, lesbian or transgender media figure that has worked to promote equality.
The CNN journalist follows a long line of famous recipients including Sir Elton John, Ricky Martin and Rosie O’Donnell.
GLAAD President Herndon Graddick stated: “By sharing his own experiences as a gay man, Anderson has reminded millions of Americans that LGBT people are part of their everyday lives and an integral part of our cultural fabric.”
The ceremony will be the first LGBT event that Cooper attends since coming out in July last year.
Cooper came out via a letter published on The Daily Beast.
The 45-year-old journalist wrote: “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”
Cooper is also nominated in the category of ‘Outstanding TV Journalism’ for a piece about an anti-gay pastor.
He has also received three previous trophies from the GLAAD Media Awards for his work reporting on issues concerning LGBT people.
The 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards will take place on 16 March in New York City.
