The New York Police Department (NYPD) are looking for six suspects in connection with an assault on a gay subway passenger that happened earlier this week.

On Monday, 23-year-old Urena Morel Frankelly and his partner were eating whilst riding a No. 2 train through Manhattan when a disagreement started between them and two women who were also riding with them.

One of the women had taken pictures of the pair while her companion called them names.

When Mr Frankelly asked her to stop, it set off an anti-gay tirade that led to the man and his partner being assaulted.

No other passengers stepped in to help, although the two were later able to escape at the next stop.

On Friday, NYPD said all six suspects are believed to be in their early 20s.

No arrests have been made so far.
