If you want to ban anything—-ban those stupid pastors that are amongst you…they are hate filled and will destroy your community…These stupid uneducated pastors are just trying to be useful and noticed…I would venture most of them really never read the bible much less know the background of the bible writers—no God didn’t write the bible and pass it down through the clouds…Sadly your town have become the laughting stock of the world…don’t let religious nuts do this to you and especially your children..

  2. The saddest thing about this is that the people who believe it’s OK to condemn and ostracise children think they are good people. It was tough growing up a gay teenager in 1970′s Britain. 40 years on and it seems we’ve hardly moved.

    1. David – how you can you say the UK has hardly moved on. Wake up – social change takes time but we’ve made enormous strides here. Besides, this is about the US – quite tired of my fellow Brits condemining where we live. Get over it.

      1. he has a point you know. It gets worse up north

  3. It’s INDIANA, one of the most redneck, backwards states in the US. I don’t know why anyone would be surprised.

    1. The good news is that the High School itself is refusing to block same sex couples from the prom, which is a refreshing change that other schools could learn from. That’s not backwards at all.

It’s a shame that some of the students and outside influences are protesting against equality and tarnishing the name of Indiana.

  4. It’s just meab-spirited bullying on the part of the parents. I am quite shocked that this is even being considered. This is literally sexual apartheid.

Let’s segregate and make people feel inferior. Sounds like a very Christian thing to do.

maybe it is time to ban all these Prom nights. what a homphobic bunch

  7. “Several local church pastors support the separate prom movement.”

Now we have absolute proof of who is behind the ‘seperate but equal’ rubbish.

  8. The good news here is that the school has been very supportive of an inclusive prom. It’s been reported elsewhere that there are same-sex couples at the school and that they have been told by the school that they are welcome to attend as a couple.

Yes, this is what the law requires, but we’ve seen too often that when schools want to they can make life miserable for gay students seeking to exercise their legal right to attend in gender-non-conforming clothing and/or with a same-sex partner.

It seems to be a minority of parents and students involved in trying to organise a “prejudice prom” – and a fairly small minority at that.

So, overall, the town of Sullivan and Sullivan High deserve praise, not criticism.

One caveat: Diana Medley, a Special Ed (special needs) teacher has made hateful anti-gay comments which seem to me to go way over the line of “personal views” and call into question her ability to do her job. That does need to be pursued.

An interview with her she says “I believe homosexuality is a choice, and the Bible tells us it is wrong.”

She then goes on to say “Young people come to me and think they might be gay. I just don’t understand it.”

How can you possibly make assumptions like being gay is a choice when you state yourself you don’t understand it? You parsimonious old bint.

‘”we’re not running anymore,” said Bill Phegley from Carlisle Church in Sullivan’…

    What a bloody idiot

When has the Christian Church EVER had to ‘run’ from Gay people?

More likely they’ve used that ‘armour’ like a bloody battering ram to oppress and down trod…

    What an ungodly idiot

  10. … and their objection is …? Oh yes! It says in the bible. These religiously-motivated bigots make me feel physically sick. They’ll protest about a couple of gay people attending a prom but the’ll happily support automatic weapon ownership. The US is truely a nation of schizophrenics.

  11. Ah, good old ‘christians’ following their bible again. I presume they’ll be banning all menstruating women from the prom then?

Or are they yet more cherry-pickers, justifying their own bigotry by citing the bible?

  12. I am actually disgusted. In a world in which young people are taking their own lives through struggling with their own sexuality, what kind of message is this sending?

  13. On the plus side, if the LGBT haters choose to self segregate from the Sullivan high School Prom that’s a win win.
For once they get to hold their own little hate group version by the dumpsters at the back whilst decent non-bigoted people can enjoy themselves at the big event.
Normally when this happens it’s the reverse.

  14. Drop em in nam air cav style. A fully loaded Huey gunship thundering through the purple marker smoke while blaring out ride of the valkyries is not to be fucked with. especially the pansy arsed pastors and clerics

  15. Diana Medley is the special ed teacher with a right-wing xtian agenda, who is behind this. She should be completely off limits to students, particularly special needs students. Not content to teach reading and arithmetic, she feels the need to tell people, “Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don’t agree with them, but I care about them. It’s the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason,” said Medley. “So the same goes for gays? Do you think they have a purpose in life?’ No I honestly don’t. Sorry, but I don’t. I don’t understand it.”

The woman is a menace to children and has no place in any school.

  16. Next thing you know we’ll be sat at the back of buses and drinking from seperate water fountains…….now why does that sound familiar??

  17. a sad and sick society devoid of human rights and who call their children after a lower lifeform namely kids… A kid is a baby goat nothing else.It is not a term of enderment but plain and simple child abuse. Clean up your heterosexual society first before pointing fingers at others who have done nothing wrong.
