  2. Gay husband? Surely ‘husband’ would have sufficed? I expect this kind of ghettoisation from mainstream media outlets but not PinkNews.

I was going to say that, then saw your post. When I marry my partner under the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, he’ll become my husband, not my gay husband. I’ve never heard anyone describe my dad as my mum’s straight husband.

It is not an Act of Parliament yet!

That was just the second reading after the first reading in the House of Commons – It being just a bill (Government Bill mind you) still has to go to the Committee Stage in the House of Commons, then the Report Stage then the Third Reading if passed, then the Bill goes straight to the House of Bigots (Lords) for a first reading, second reading, Committee Stage, Report stage and another third readings. Then any amendments to the bill will go ping pong between the Houses for any and menus to the bill until the bill is in its exact form in both houses – then the bill finally passes both houses of Parliament and then even has to go to the Queen (Elizabeth 2) for Royal Assent!

Even then there still has to be an effective date when the law comes into effect so do not get your hopes up, because an average bill in the UK takes about a year to pass Parliament. It could be (2015 at the earliest) that gay marriage becomes effective in England and Wales!

        1. I wrote – “any menus”

I was meant to write – “any amendments”

        2. Pedant. When Tim marries his partner, it will be because the Bill has become the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, just as he wrote.

All the best to Tim and his fiancé.

How can we have true equality if we keep distinguishing between gay and straight marriage. Marriage is marriage and to refer to this man as so-and-so’s ‘gay’ husband is frankly appalling.
But..best wishes and good luck to the guy.

Good luck to him. It’ll be an uphill struggle to unseat a Republican in mid-term elections with a Democrat in the White House but you never know.

It’s obvious that Sean is the gay husband — and not the straight one.

We really must thank Pink News for helping sort “just-who-is-who” in this same-sex marriage business!
