It is important to note that Germans use a lot of English words in daily life. When lucky it even makes sense, some times it doesn’t (‘body bag’ for a bag you wear close to your body? Oh dear. ‘Handy’ for mobile?) – so when someone German uses the word ‘outing’ like they do here, they actually mean ‘coming out’.
I’m pretty sure the speaker did not mean to imply that a gay footballer could be outed.
