More Conservative MPs voted against same-sex marriage than for it

David Cameron’s spirits on succeeding to get the Marriage (Same Sex couples) Bill through the first round of the Parliamentary process will be dampened by the knowledge that more of his MPs voted against rather than for his policy.

126 Conservatives voted for marriage equality, while 134 voted against while 35 Conservatives including Defence Secretary Philip Hammmond did not vote at all.

Shortly after the vote, Maria Miller, the Minister for Equalities Tweeted: “Long day but Commons has voted resoundingly for Equal Marriage. Thanks to all that tenor of debate was respect & tolerance.”
