    Well, not any more!

  2. bobbleobble 4 Feb 2013, 11:30am

So what if it has? Marriage used to be for life in this country too until the founder of your church decided he didn’t want to stay married to his wife because she couldn’t give him a son.

Marriage changes and adapts to the society in which it finds itself. An appeal to tradition is a ridiculous argument. Seems it’s not just MPs who are worryingly idiotic.

    1. Fortunately – he didnt- the Telegraph was guessing —- Wrongly !

  3. Dave North 4 Feb 2013, 11:44am

    Archbigot of Cunterbury.

  4. Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest???

  5. Kim Berlin 4 Feb 2013, 11:50am

if you believe the church, Eve was created from a rib that came from Adam. So if Adam married Eve, was he not marrying a part of himself?

    1. Dave north 4 Feb 2013, 12:26pm

And who did their kids sh@g to further the species?

      1. Exactly, the jewish/christian/muslim creation story is based on incest.

  6. Chester666666 4 Feb 2013, 11:53am

It didn’t use to be until Christianity stole it, redefined it and then lied about it
Besides things are always changing like divorce is accepted for example, so is different races marrying

    1. Dave north 4 Feb 2013, 12:27pm

The entire CofE was constructed to allow a king do divorce.

  7. Welby did you know the Uk as the lowest attendance for church goers in the EU?

How come you don’t have an issue taking the Pink Pound?

Make me vomit -the amount of queens working in the church do you not see them -or just look the other way.

    The church doesn’t own marriage

  8. bobbleobble 4 Feb 2013, 11:59am

Actually marriage in this country has only officially been between a man and a woman since 1866 when the House of Lords ruled on the matter. It’s only been law in statute since 1971. Before 1866 it’s quite plausible that two men or two women could be married.

  9. Brett Gibson 4 Feb 2013, 12:05pm

He looks like a right paedo.

    1. Please don’t judge on appearances and resort to the lynch-mob mentality. Nobody ‘looks like a paedo’ – that’s why so many people get away with abuse.

  10. come back rowan williams we miss you

    1. George Broadhead 4 Feb 2013, 5:11pm

Williams is the last person we want back. Greeted with joy as liberal and gay-friendly whn he was appointed, he turned out to be a dead loss.

  11. But this is civil law? Why is his view considered so important on a matter of civil law? The church is safeguarded against getting involved against their wishes?

    1. Because every step towards GLBT equality brings the churches closer to having to end their tyranny and they are fighting tooth and nail to preserve their right to discriminate. Their arguments reek of desperation. They know they are losing.

  12. Archevil!! It’s coming something when you can get married South Africa but not the UK apartheid on our shores!!

  13. Here’s the new Archbigot, just the same as the last Archbigot

  14. It’s time all the women priests who can’t become bishops and all the gay clergy who can’t marry handed in there notice and shut the whole scam down. It’s been controlling people under apartheid for too long

  15. DJ Sheepiesheep 4 Feb 2013, 12:24pm

Who elected him? No one. It’s just the private opinion of the leader of a private club that desperately panders to the bigotry of West Africa and the USA and which probably does not reflect the majority view of it’s members in this country.

  16. Andy Smyth 4 Feb 2013, 12:27pm

According to your article, Justin Welby served as Bishop of Durham for ten years.

I’m sure this will come as quite a shoch to Tom Wright who was actually Bishop of Durham from 03-10.

Welby was actually a Bishop for just under 2 years.

  17. Archbishop of Canterbury? This girl? :D

  18. Dave North 4 Feb 2013, 12:29pm

History begs to disagree with your “opinion”.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_same-sex_unions

Just saying something does not make it fact.

    1. “Just saying something does not make it fact.”

Ah but the religious have form there don’t they?

  19. Well now since the whole of the CofE has been chucked in the slammer, with four prison walls intact no less, whatever Welby says is now from the position of ‘prisoner of his own making’, and as such, counts for nothing.

  20. WordsmithNeil 4 Feb 2013, 12:46pm

It’s always good to see someone making a big effort to make friends on their first day in a new job…

  21. Sky daddy doesn’t like liars.

Marriage as portrayed consistently in his putrid document – the moronic campfire tales and scrawlings of savages – include all sorts of “non-traditional” marriages that are not as this befrocked bloody charlatan describes.

And he would do well to remember that his disgusting church was founded to serve an impotent king with a taste for matricide.

    1. Uxoricide, not matricide.

But good call on the Biblical “non-traditional” marriages. I always enjoy the Betty Bowers account: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFkeKKszXTw

    2. Robert in S. Kensington 4 Feb 2013, 1:46pm

Agreed. Not only that, it was also founded on taste for adultery. HenryVIII’s marriages involved more than one woman at a time, one man and two women. Welby needs to be reminded of that. It also opposed the right of women to vote as well as supported slavery.

  22. Quelle surprise! Another bigoty fearful archbishop. They really are deeply unpleasant people.

  23. Let him oppose and rant…their churches are emptying, their power and influence is fading. They forget that so many people today see and know LGBT people in work, as neighbours, friends, family, and on TV and they support us. Its no longer IF we get Equal Marriage..but When and that scares them

  24. So what you backward fool – for centuries people were fed lies about a sky god who was vengeful and all powerful – Fiction pure Fiction made up by white men who wanted to control the masses – Marriage was a contract to keep people under control -

Religion is DEAD – Long live Evolution

  25. Our Archbishop does look lovely in a dress.

    Shame he’s a bigot.

  26. The only thing we can be certain of is change.

This slick evangelical may have great sound bites, but he is out of touch with reality.

    Nothing new there then!!!

  27. I don’t even want to get married but if I pay my taxes like everyone else why the hell not?

This man of god made his money through banking and now wants his soul back by “trying” playing nice but his true nasty colours are showing. Damn bigot

  28. Yawn! Another cretin!

  29. Robert in S. Kensington 4 Feb 2013, 1:42pm

F-ck off, Welby. We don’t want any dialogue with you ever and what would be the point? What a hypocrite. He wants no truck with homophobia, so what does he think opposition to equal marriage is all about?

  30. The Archbishop hasn’t said anything … yet.

    The media says:
    … is expected to say
    … he will say
    … a source told …

“Lambeth Palace was keen to stress the view was standard Church of England policy and insisted the Archbishop was not planning to wade into the row by making any formal statements…”

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2273024/Iain-Dale-Secretly-gay-MPs-planning-vote-sex-weddings–married.html

The media loves to have a stir and raise the temperature, but let’s wait and see what he actually says.

    1. if the view is standard church policy, then it is a formal statement

  31. Craig Nelson 4 Feb 2013, 1:51pm

When one has an unexploded bomb in one’s garden my advice is to leave the property and call the authorities not have a good old poke around and see what might happen.

You have only just started your archbishopric, don’t start it off with a PR disaster.

  32. No it hasn’t. Is this man ignorant or just mendacious? Apart from the fact there have been same sex marriages before, the bible itself is full of proof of polygamy eg Abraham, Solomon etc etc. So all that ‘it’s always been one man, one woman’ stuff is a complete lie.

    Bad start, Archbishop.

  33. CH Brighton 4 Feb 2013, 2:07pm

The Emperor Claudius married his niece. Nero married a young boy whose looks reminded him of his former wife. Emperor Elagabulus married a male slave. A king in Donegal married a horse. The archbishop married his wife and I’m going to marry my partner.

  34. Pink News: your headlines are going from bad to worse. Please DO NOT put comments in quotes unless they have actually been said by the person person supposedly quoted – it’s basic journalism.

  35. so much for prayerful listening then

  36. Staircase2 4 Feb 2013, 2:46pm

    …I thought he was gay..l

    1. His wife thinks he is too…

  37. Thanks for that mate! You really can’t have too much rancid bigotry on display can you? He’s factually incorrect of course but he does confess to being the thickest bishop in the C of E. He’ll have to try hard to beat Dr(sic) Carey but he’s off to a good start.

  38. Staircase2 4 Feb 2013, 3:04pm

    I thought he was gay…

  39. “If asked he will say that marriage is between a man and a woman, and always has been.”

Oh my, was that the sound of someone passing wind? Biblically speaking, this statement is incorrect. Big guys like Abraham were married to more than one woman, but these anti-equality guys seem to want to gloss over that.

  40. Garry Cassell 4 Feb 2013, 3:22pm

Well, what’s new….another Archbigot…nice paying job..only requirement keep updated on the daily hate quota…can’t be lacking in that department. So happy I left the church couldn’t stand the lies and hatred any longer…I found as a Canadian that for the clergy I knew truth only happened when the lie didn’t bring the desired results…

  41. … and Anglicanism wouldn’t even exist if Henry V111 hadn’t changed the ‘tradition’. Things constantly evolve – even where your old book is concerned. Successive regimes have been extremely selective is editing its rules to suit themselves. The church does not OWN ‘marriage’. It has no right to claim it’s definition is the only one allowed. ‘Marriage’ is a CIVIL CONTRACT between two people. If the government wishes to change the ‘traditional’ definition, the church should have no say whatsoever in the decision.

  42. Janet Lameck 4 Feb 2013, 3:30pm

I’m from the Show me state. Show me where it definitely says that in your so called Bible! It just says so and so took himself a wife, it never said what sex HE was!

  43. The idiotic anti-historical views of this witch-doctor are reported because he heads the Established Church.
Disestablish it now. There is no rational need for us all to be bothered at every turn by this tripe.

  44. …it isn’t surprising this narrow minded twit said this about marriage. The annoying factor of his lack of intelligence or knowing is like many others, is when you take into consideration the length of time the human race has been on this planet for, (which really is nothing) you ought to understand and agree that marriage is certainly not only for heterosexuals. Just because we’ve been committing the same habit for years what’s wrong with slight change!!!

  45. The point is The Telegraph ‘reported’ that they ‘thought’ ( / hoped ?!) he’d say this.

    BUT he did n’t !!!

Listen to the News. On the 1pm he made a very mild -leave me outa this, kinda statment !!!

  46. Archbigot’s ‘enthronement’ at Canterbury Cathedral is set for 21 March. (Cath’ closed to all vistors from the 18th due to arrangements)
Whilst the gay marriage issue will be over by then, that perhaps a an lgbt qwelcome ‘mat’/demo for him on that date is in order???
Place called the ‘Buttermarket’ is in the centre of the city and beside the main public gate to the Cathedral.
Canterbury has two rail stations- East and West, then 10min walk to centre. Bus sta 5 mins to centre.

  47. Now the Vatican feels persecuted like world war 2 Jews ! WtF !

    https://www.bitebackpublishing.com/books/mullahs-without-mercy-paperback

  48. BORING……

  49. Always has been, eh? Yeah, apart from all the times in the Bible where it’s one man and several women.

  50. Richard the Big Bunny 4 Feb 2013, 7:50pm

Well, actually, he is just flat wrong.

Even in his own bible, marriage has been redefined several times. And The Church of England *exists* due to redefining marriage.

Furthermore, there is plenty of evidence that both the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches once sanctioned and sanctified same-sex unions (see the book: SAME-SEX UNIONS IN PREMODERN EUROPE).

  51. Jerry Ballew 4 Feb 2013, 10:29pm

Home Schooled were we, Welby? Obviously history was skipped or slid unnoticed through the consciousness briefly. The Roman Marriage Ceremony was used until the 1100s by both men and women and men and men. The church had no interested in marriage or how people were married other than it was “better” than “burning with lust.” Only priests were married in the Christian Church. But then Christian Priests decided to get involved and set some Church “standards.” So there went same-sex mariages out the window “officially.” Not to say that same-sex unions were no longer practiced, especially in the monasteries. Hell we don’t even have to resort to ancient to semi-ancient history lessons. Men are marrying men and women are marrying women as we speak. “Always has been” is a bit of a stretch there, Welby….

  52. Art Pearson 4 Feb 2013, 11:49pm

According to Author John Boswell – Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality, Same Sex Unions were performed and legal in the Roman Empire. Perhaps His Eminence, the AB of C needs to define “Always”.

  53. What happened to “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God?

  54. …and why do those with this interpretation of the Scriptures get to impose their interpretation on other religions for whom it is a violation of religious principle of Equality (Quaker)

Quakers want to marry equally because Equality is a fundamental religious principle for us not because we are woolly and liberal and progressive. How can one religion impose their religious position on another religion. It makes no sense.

  55. ‘Marriage is between a man and a woman, and always has been’

Well Welby… I hate to inform you but… umm… things are about to change…..

  56. Marriage used to be forever, men used to be able to beat their wives and a man used to be able to sell his daughter into marriage.
I also believe the Bible clearly states that if a woman is not a virgin on her wedding night the marriage is invalid and she can be stoned to death for playing the “wh*re” in her father’s house.

He doesn’t support this, does he?

  57. there was a time in America and I bet the same in Britain when marriage was between a WHITE MAN and WHITE WOMAN only

BTW while all these racist laws were finally overturned by scotus in `1967, Some of them had allowed a black woman to marry a white man but not the opposite.

Something about protecting the sanctity of the white race and white women.

  58. I think homosexuality is sick and bringing down society and good family values. Some people just dont want to hear the truth. Thankyou archbishshop for speaking the truth. Shame some people cant take the truth.
