  3. Iain Dale, what a superb letter, and what a very fine and intelligent thing to do on the day before the big debate. Well done! And thank you!

  4. Iain, I rarely agree with you on most of the big political issues. But thank you for putting the case for marriage equality so personally and eloquently. And also thanks for being out publicly in politics.

Back in the day I bought an awful lot of books from Ian Dale when he was affiliated with Politico’s Bookstore and when he was on the UK Politics Open Discussion e-mail list. He has written a wonderful letter, and I don’t regret any money I spent on his books. The scale of the vote in favour of equal marriage shows that once in awhile the UK Parliament gets it right. Compare this vote with the current level of discussion in America! They will come around too, because the tide is definitely moving in the direction of openness and freedom, and even those of us who are heterosexual can feel that we can breathe freely at last. Look at how many people whose lives have been darkened over the years because they were gay and were persecuted for no reason other than that a lot of imbeciles hated them for no reason, such as John Gielgud. Hopefully this darkness will lift and sunlight come out again.

But this is not what Iain used to say on his blog, when he opposed gay marriage.

I rather like Ian, but never trust a Tory
