In a strange way things have vastly improved since Souter’s so called “referendum”. Decent people have made sure nothing like that ever happens again in this country.
Probably Labour’s finest achievement was to appoint Bercow as Speaker….He’s loathed by the right wing of his own party, of course – which says it all, really:-)

The trouble is the much vaunted last government, and this one, spent and spend far too much effort appeasing religious reactionaries – hence all the fateful opt-out clauses which actually extended the scope of discrimination against lgb people in the name of ‘faith’. This state-sanctioned homophobia is a blot on the statute book and all it must be repealed.
I agree, Richard. The pages and pages of labyrinthine clauses designed to appease the homophobic churches are extraordinary, and, as you say, a blot on the statute book.
He’ll really hve his work cut out next Tuesday- when the Equal Marriage debate at last reaches The House of Commons.
