  1. More lies. Honestly, they cannot stop lying through their teeth. Disgusting behaviour.

It is always worth bearing this in mind – Opponents of marriage equality have been telling these lies for years. When actually challenged to go on the record under threat of punishment for lying (by perjuring themselves during the Prop 8 trial) only ONE dared get on the stand and it was immediately demonstrated that he was a clueless and offered opinion with no foundation.

There has never been an ounce of credible evidence to back up their lies. And they know it.

Surely, their capacity for dishonesty behaviour demonstrates that THEY might be the ones with “immoral” leanings.

  2. This kind of mendacity should be criminalised! ;-)

  3. Jane Bailey 20 Jan 2013, 1:43pm

How can doing he right think morally – i.e. Legislating to make society more just and equal and less discriminatory and repressive – cause a breakdown in morals and mire crime???
    Go figure!

    1. Jock S. Trap 21 Jan 2013, 12:20pm

Yes, less discrimination and less repressive But more discrimination and crime from those religious people who feel they should have the right to be bigots.

  4. This man like this theory is bogus there is no Rhyme or Reason to assume that there is a correlation between crime and same sex marriage, unless it’s within his own wrapped sense of morality. If he has proof of this affect then stand up and point it out if not as his piece states then it’s the sound of his own inept voice he is vocal is advocating and not some half baked theory

  5. Where do they get these ideas!

    1. That There Other David 20 Jan 2013, 5:42pm

      Religious conditioning as a child.

      That’s my guess anyway.

  6. Robert (Kettering) 20 Jan 2013, 2:23pm

Increases in crime? How does this homophic bigot justify that claim?

So then, let me get this straight, Equality for the LGBT community is responsible for all plagues; pestulents; earthquakes; storms; heat waves; Tsunamis; bad harvests; and now crimes!! What a powerful lot we are.

Seriousy, when the hell is some government going to stand up to the homophic bigots who make these daft claims and tell them to “F” Off?!

  7. Neil Cameron 20 Jan 2013, 2:39pm

If his delusion were true, then it would effectively be a statement that mainstream society would react to legalized gay marriage by going on a crime spree!
Does society need to be protected from gay marriage or does society need to be protected from the christian majority?

    1. Robert (Kettering) 20 Jan 2013, 3:24pm

Clearly we al need protecting fro the Christian majority seeing it’s such people who enjoy making our lives a misery all in the name of their immaginary friend.

  8. Don’t forget to mention the earthquakes and hurricanes as well Gareth.

  9. Anti same-sex marriage opponents at it again?? I must give this bigot brownie points for originality! An increase in crime rate because of same-sex marriage!!?? That’s a first!!

  10. Dave North 20 Jan 2013, 4:39pm

    That is so true.

The very second I came out of the council offices armed with my civil partnership I immediately felt the need to mug old people, refuse to pay taxes and steal cars.

We really are hearing it all.

These goons hate us SO MUCH that any excuse will suffice.

Thankfully, the more extreme they become the more bums are being removed from church pews, as logical people hold no truck with this sh!t.

  11. One very basic truth : take the crime rates of ANY kind in the LGBT population compared to those of the general population and it shows us as gentle enlightened and tolerant, and heterosexuals as barbarians, by a very large margin. A simple truth many cannot fathom to understand, even amongst ourselves.

  12. Nice try anti-gay Christians but gays and criminals are two different people. It is a fact that there are more Christian criminals in prisons in America than any other religion.

  13. I don’t understand. Every country thinks that it’s legalising marriage equality for the first time. Why don’t they look at Canada, Sweden, the Netherlands… for possible negative effects? Is it nationalism or what?

    1. That There Other David 20 Jan 2013, 5:48pm

Every country doesn’t think that. Every anti-equality group in that country tries to paint it that way.

I do suggest Mr. McVicar go and research whether crime has indeed rocketed in Canada or The Netherlands since they equalised access to marriage. Seeing as so many in New Zealand are either British ex-pats or of Dutch ancestry those are the two best approximations of how his own nation will be affected by my reckoning.

(Crime has not rocked in either country BTW. That’s a surprise eh?)

    2. Dave North 20 Jan 2013, 6:11pm

There is nothing to understand. Some people simply hate gay people.

At 47 I am tired of it.

100 warfarin and a bottle of whiskey.

  14. I’ve heard it all now, what a complete moron!

  15. Robert in S. Kensington 20 Jan 2013, 6:03pm

What annoys me is that this sort of thing is allowed to fester. Here in the UK, they get away with the most outrageous mendacious statements to stall equal marriage without as much as any challenge from supporters in government and little help from the media which seems to cover only the negative nonsense.

The apathy and complacency by supporters are extremely worrying while these nutters seem to be making a lot of noise giving the impression they are winning the argument. People end up believing it, like those vile Tory backbenchers and their shills the Daily Mail and Telegraph and of late, the BBC.. Now its creeping into the Labour party. It’s about time somebody went after them for a change. Where is StonewallUK in all this?

    1. bobbleobble 20 Jan 2013, 9:30pm

Stonewall? Too busy patting themselves on the back over its irrelevant workplace equality index to actually stand up for us. They’re no longer fit for purpose.

      1. Stonewall will NOT do anything useful for gay marriage.

Originally, they were against gay marriage, and maintained that civil partnerships were sufficient. It was only when major funders pressured them that they changed their mind.

As you suggest, they’re nothing more than a corporate awards body.

        1. bobbleobble 20 Jan 2013, 10:45pm

Then PinkNews should absolutely call them on their inaction because we are being attacked left right and centre and they are being useless. Either it’s time for them to step up or step aside.

  16. It is frustrating that some keep intoning that SSM will weaken the institution of marriage when the opposite is true. Some are steadfast in their belief that it would be a loosening of public morals to allow two people to make a commitment of this kind. The mind boggles.

  17. Tsunamis, Mr Mcvicar! You forgot the tsunamis!

You can only laugh at these idiots. The idea that the only thing stopping citizens committing crimes is the knowledge that gay people aren’t allowed to marry. It’s almost as stupid as that ‘if we have same sex marriage, abortions will increase’ argument.

  18. I can see a rise in Hate crimes toward the homosexual community and bigotry toward them aswell. But only because wingnuts like this are still around spouting their BS.

  19. Har Davids 21 Jan 2013, 9:31am

Surely, there must statistical evidence to back this up, even though I can’t remember reading about the increase of crime in those countries where equal marriage has been a fact for years. This is worse than claiming Jesus and his dad will shed tears for every gay couple that gets married.

  20. Jock S. Trap 21 Jan 2013, 12:18pm

Like it has in all other countries that have marriage equality… Not!

Just another desperate attempt by sadly lonely religious folk.

All this suggests is that religious folk will be the cause of the crime increase… oh the irony of religion!

  21. They really are pulling things our of their backsides now, aren’t they?

  22. douglas in canada 21 Jan 2013, 2:24pm

FACT: Every criminal who ever lived has been the product of a heterosexual union of some kind.

Based on the logic of this lobby group, I would propose that eliminating heterosexual unions will unltimately rid the world of criminals.

    Makes sense to me…. :P

  23. Har Davids 21 Jan 2013, 3:34pm

Rise in crime, more abortions, tsunamis, earth-quakes, pinks swastikas, it’s gaymageddon-time !!! They haven’t come up with one argument why equal marriage should not be introduced. Plenty of countries have it, without any negative effects on society as a whole.

  24. This is very strange as he has an openly gay daughter and last I heard he was very supportive of her and her partner and helped run the family farm…..wonder how they feel about this or are like MP Chris finlayson (gay mp against gay marriage) and self hating d bags.
