Why am I thinking of Groucho Marx and what he had to say about club memberships?

  2. This is one of the most disgraceful episodes I have read about recently.
Quite right to turn down the patronising “honorary” membership.
The club may be privately owned but how long would they be tolerated if they had a colour bar?

Some elements of the US military still seem to have a long way to go.

Mind you, Fort Bragg is in North Carolina, an area where one might find the odd example of bigotry (that was sarcasm, by the way).

As for the Fort Bragg officials who claim there is nothing they can do as the club is privately owned, they are talking nonsense. They could withdraw the club’s privileges to operate on the base, and even ban membership for military personnel.

“Officials at Fort Bragg say that there is nothing they can do because the club itself is privately-owned.”

Well actually they could all stop going and see if that brings about an change in heart maybe.

  5. Good on her for standing her ground on that. She shouldn’t need a “special” membership. None of the other wives do.

I think it’s disgraceful that American military spouses face this kind of trouble.

  6. Well done her! How offensive to offer her special guest membership. It’s like saying ‘you’re not a *real* wife*.

It’d be nice if everyone boycotted the club till it treated its members more fairly.

    1. As she does not have a husband like all the other wives, theymay have to creat a new category for her

  7. I thought the US military already said a few weeks ago that ‘any of these clubs not accepting gay couples will be banned’? If it’s a private club then the military should ban all the other members from attending. It seems they’ve given in to ignorance.

    1. The US Marines have said that any clubs that don’t admit gay spouses will be banned. This is an Army base, and the Army has taken no such stance. The head of the base said “there is nothing he can do” as it’s a private org, but in fact he can have them removed from the base.

Remember in the US Army – [Article 125 Sodomy] still is in the USMJC still exists that bans gay sex!

The repeal of the DADT policy was just the beginning!

Article 125 needs to be repealed also and also it is high time that Gay and Lesbian US Army Spouses need to have recognition in the same way as heterosexual spouses as well – but that can be done with the full repeal of the 1996 law called DOMA!

  9. Good on her for being gracious. I would have told them to go f**k themselves!

  10. You can bet your bottom dollar that if this privately owned club on an army base refused membership to the spouses of black or Jewish peronnel the army would move pretty quickly.
