Study: Bisexual men ‘on the down low’ risk poor mental health
A new study shows bisexual men are far less likely to reveal their sexual orientation than gay men, and that keeping it a secret risks damaging their health.
In a study published by the American Psychological Association, researchers studied a group of bisexual men who seek partners “on the down low.”
They found that men who live with a wife or girlfriend, and who think of themselves as heterosexual but sometimes have sex with other men, are far more likely to conceal their same-sex behaviour.
Nearly 38% of the men studied said that they have not shared with anyone that they have sex with men.
Only 41% reported that they had confided in a best friend or parent.
The study also found that greater concealment of their sexual behaviour correlated with more symptoms of depression and anxiety, along with other emotional problems.
