Thai people have a much more fluid concept of gender than we do and particularly in the performance industry their ladyboys are equally likely to identify as either male or female when they’re off-stage. In fact even after transitioning it is common to prefer being known as a ladyboy rather than as a woman as there is a level of prestige with the title.

“Ladyboy” is a derogatory term. It’s incredibly frustrating that people use it. It is a porn-term. Calling a trans woman a ladyboy is effectively denying her her identity as a woman and therefore transphobic. Transphobia, especially towards trans women, significantly overlaps with homophobia.
