Equally, the Boy Scouts of America should not allow openly heterosexual leaders.

  4. yes, because we all know just how precise a poll asking 1000 people, out of a population of 300 million, can be.

I’d say that the results of that poll were: “52% of the minuscule group of people we called were against it”.

That sample size is not really an issue assuming that the sample was selected randomly and no biasing factors were introduced, inadvertently or otherwise. A sample size of 1015 is good enough for a 95% confidence interval of a few percentage points either side of the 52% (which may mean that in fact a slight minority, not a majority, of the population thinks that the scouts should not allow openly gay leaders). This is irrespective of the size of the population.

Still, it would be nice to think that some bias has crept in there in the method of sampling and/or the manner in which the question was posed, because the result is pretty depressing.

      1. But comparing state to state they vary a lot in how advanced they are in actually being a decent human being! (Just avoid Texas! LMAO!)

  5. Shocking. Whenever I read a statistic like this, I’d like to ask a second question of those who answered that openly gay Scout leaders shouldn’t be allowed – ie WHY NOT?

The interesting thing is that they’re acting as if their ‘Scout Oath’ was carved from rock in the beginning at the dawn of time…

…whereas its actually a rewrite of the original Scout Law as created in the UK (Scouting originated in the UK)

The UK Scout Association has evolved over time whereas the US Scout Association refuses to

    1. The Scout Oath contains nothing to exclude Gay people as far as I can see. The word “straight” refers to honesty, not sexuality (it was written in 1908). The word “morality” does not apply, as being Gay is not immoral or “dirty”. Those who refute this are homophobes. The scout movement deny they are homophobic.
      But they clearly are.

  8. They are obviously worried about pedophilia. Some pedos are attracted to jobs in institutions like the scouts, orphanages etc. But this anti Gay rule is so short sighted. An adult male who is comfortable with his sexuality and not trying to hide something will be a far more suitable and well-balanced person to care for children. Some Gay people without families of their own would prove to be hard working and devoted leaders. People forced to deny their sexuality (like priests) are often not too trustworthy.
But of course it’s more than pedophilia. It is pure homophobia when they chuck out an Eagle Scout because he is brave enough to come out.

Thankfully, we don’t have that problem in the British Scout movement. I wonder if the American Scouts have any affiliation with ours? If so, maybe it should be severed.

  9. The same majority allowed pedophiles to be Scout Leaders, yet they do not allow LGBT people to be Scout Leaders. I do not think I would want my child to be a boy Scout if they let pedophiles to be Scout Leaders but I would let my child be a Boy scout if his leaders were LGBT.

  12. I think a lot of people probably mistook the question as asking them not if the BSA should allow gay leaders but if they should be forced to, since that’s how the issue has come to be framed here. That would also make sense given that the same poll found that 61% support gay people adopting and raising children.

  13. Regardless of public opinion, sponsors money being withdrawn is what will swing this. I hope there’s some kind of US based campaign group lobbying all the major donors to the Boy Scouts to encourage them to withdraw support as some already have. The fact there are many stupid, ignorant and bigoted people out there – is neither a surprise nor relevant really.
