That’s good news. There are others states like Alagoas, Bahia and Piauí that officially recognize gay marriage in Brazil. This new change in Sao Paulo may be recognized in all the national territory.

When and how same-sex marriage in Brazil will come nation wide? In Parliament or in Supreme Court (again)? Current situation is a little absurd, I think: civil union law (what is in the fact not ‘true’ parliamentarian law, just formal ‘Imprimatur’ by the Judicial Commission of the decision of Supreme Court from May 2011), but lower courts just ‘ignore’ it – and make gay marriage legal. Situation like this needs final solution and logical end.
Unfortunately legislation moves very slowly in Brazil, but I’m pretty sure it’ll happen by the end of Dilma’s current term of office.
This is very good news against the Pope of Vicious 16th. It will be good to see Brasil advance towards marriage equality with Argentina and Uruguay.
Very nice and symbolic ‘welcome’ to the Bishop of Rome, when he arrive to Rio in the next year, indeed! Nationwide same-sex marriage law will be even more better, of course.
