A few years ago, the Australian satirical news team The Chaser surprised a the son of the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, home of the God Hates Fags campaign by flirting with him on national television.

The Chaser’s Chris Firth approached Fred Phelps Junior on the pretence of filming a news report about the church and its opposition to homosexuality. But the encounter suddenly switched into flirting.

Firrth chats up Mr Phelps saying: “Did you just give me a look? Because you’ve got a really nice look.”
Embarresed, Mr Phelps called on the help of Shirley Phelps-Roper, who had called on the church to protest at the funerals of the children murdered at the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting.

“Why is this guy touching me on the butt and patting me?” Mr Phelps exclaims, before he added: “We’ve got a pervert on our hands!”

On Saturday, the church announced that it will picket the funerals of the children killed at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut to worldwide outrage. Twenty children and six adults were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday. Most of the children that were killed were aged between six and seven.

President Obama is being petitioned to class the Westboro Baptist Church, the home of the ‘God Hates Fags’ campaign as a hate group.

Earlier this week, the Ku Klux Klan stepped in to counter a protest by the homophobic Westboro Baptist Church at the Arlington National Cemetery.

Last year, the Supreme Court, with a majority of eight to one, ruled that the church should be allowed to picket funerals by relying on their First Amendment rights to free speech.

In 2009, the British Government placed a ban on members of the church entering the UK due to their attitude to homosexuality.
