Probably because they subscribe to ridiculous stereotypes like the two I mentioned earlier.
I think Joss is making the point that women in politics are often branded lesbians by the media and political opponents as a way of putting them down – Hillary Clinton, Harriet Harman and Julia Gillard. Maybe some really are lesbians and maybe not, the point is that it shouldn’t be used as a way to get at a female politician, but it always is.
Sadly it is. For females who succeed in almost any roles there are questions about their sexuality, attractiveness and how many different ways she’d have to be beaten and/or raped in order to put her back in her place. I find it dreadful that women buy into this misogyny, but then I think one of the reasons behind it is because they don’t want it to be them next.

And sadly, a lot of this criticism of professional woman often comes from other women – especially newspaper columnists who slag off their clothes and hairstyles and their personal lives as if that makes the slightest bit of difference to their ability, or lack thereof, to do the job.
