This isn’t too new. Starting from this year, my university (University of Southampton) began asking users (optionally) of their sexual preference and if they are the same sex now as their birth sex.
So long as the gender options are ‘and’ rather than ‘or’ – just because someone is trans doesn’t mean they aren’t male or female. In fact, if they want to gather proper data, it’d be much better to have one question about gender identity (male, female, or fill in other), and a separate one asking whether the applicant identifies as trans.
