I can’t stand the sensationalisation of LGBT in soaps. They seem to think nobody will notice that a straight character suddenly turning gay is NOT how it works. Hollyoaks is a personal hate of mine, it is lauded for being ‘modern’ and ‘pushing boundaries’. Pushing the boundaries of idiocy more like.
Nick Cotton was/is a boo-hiss baddie, isn’t he? So back in the 80s making him “turn” gay would have been another way of signalling his general shiftiness, unreliability and untrustworthiness, there’d have been nothing in any way positive about such a development. Thank goodness they didn’t sink quite to that level.
There is absolutely no way in this world Nick Cotton would have had a relationship with Lofty. The thought of it is just farcical. Lofty?! Meek, bespectacled beau to Michelle Fowler?!
I think not. Nah. Den would have been way more his type.

I think the actor showed more sense than the scriptwriter in this instance.
“Oh I say!” (lights a fag)…
