He really does look like a bitter, lonely man.

I do find it ironic that the Catholic Church, who don’t allow their priests to marry, have such an opinionated view of equal marriage.

And I was always under the impression that their priests were “married” to god, so doesn’t that make them all hypocritical?

    Post a reply →
    1. If Priests are married to God, and they call God ‘Father’ …. aren’t they then in a same-sex marriage???? Just asking!!!!

        1. and if we’re talking the father, the son and the holy spirit then it’s a polygamous incestuous same sex marriage. Hypocrites.

          Post a reply →
          1. Heh.

    2. The ONLY reason catholic priests don’t marry is for inheritance reasons. Priests USED to marry until the vatican realised they were missing out on the valuable estates of deceased priests which were, rightly, passing to their widows. So, the vatican stopped priests marrying. Organised religion has always been about power, control and, above all, wealth. If they TRUELY followed biblical teachings, wouldn’t they give away the vast wealth of the church and ‘live as the birds of the field’? Ah no – sorry. They only choose to obey the bits that suit their own ends ….

      1. In part – but there was also the need to be ‘pure’ before celebrating the liturgy, which included no hanky-panky the night before. As daily celebrations became the norm, married life became difficult. At least that’s what I heard as an altar boy……………………………….

It shows how twisted they are if they think that having sex makes someone less pure the following day. It says they think sex is dirty. Personally, if there’s mutual consent, I can see anything wrong with it.

The Prime Minister is there to represent everybody. Christian and non-Christian alike. Gays and straights. Minorities and the majority alike.

It is quite understandable. The church has had its way for far too long, fooling the sheep that unthinkingly follow whatever nonsense it spouts. Now that more and more people are recognising the vile hate it peddles under the lying claim of ‘love’, it is trying to play the victim card. It would like us to believe that by being given a choice it is being persecuted, knowing full well that there is no other way of disguising the true, disgusting nature of the institution.

Nick Weeks How DARE this Bishop pretend that “Christians” support his bigoted and homophobic views ?!

There are plenty of good Christians, as well as members of many other faiths and none, who strongly support equal marriage, and the right of each Church or faith to determine for itself whether or not it will solemnise same-sex marriages.

    Post a reply →
  11. “He has also accused the PM of undermining family life for allegedly refusing to support moves by Christians at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to demand their right to wear the cross at work.”

Wait, what? What has wearing a cross at work to do with family life? Family life takes place at home, unless you work in a place run by your family. Or do these people feel their work IS their family? I’m confused. What is the logic?

    Post a reply →
    1. Of course, it’s also generally considered a bad idea for the government to get involved in ongoing court cases. A lot of these Christian activists seem to feel their views are so uniquely important that the normal rules shouldn’t apply to them. Look at George Carey’s demand for the government to put Christian judges in charge of cases involving religion, or all the complaints about the way the equal marriage consultation was carried out (as if it was different to any other consultation).

      Post a reply →
      1. Hmm. And here was I thinking a judge should be impartial, really. So, would they also advocate Muslim judges to preside over a case involving Muslims? Or is that, once again, another bridge too far?

I honestly don’t understand their reasoning.

  33. It’s sad but true that gay marriage, like women priests, demonstrates the weakness of the Catholic Church is its self-imposed intransigence – they have taught, for example, that (a) being gay is sinful for centuries and (b) the Catholic Church cannot err. Slavery was permitted and usury was banned for so long and it really does take a massive public revulsion of the Church’s attitude to have them budge their position even a smidgeon. Joseph Devine is what he looks like – an intolerant person who likes dressing up in fancy clothes. Leave them to wallow in their shrinking empire, and don’t allow them an inch more influence than they deserve – which is none.

    Post a reply →
    1. ‘Catholic Church is its self-imposed intransigence – they have taught, for example, that (a) being gay is sinful for centuries ‘

No ‘they’ did not ! You are confusing an orientation with the choice of acting out disordered sexual acts .

“To the extent that a homosexual tendency or inclination is not subject to one’s free will, one is not morally culpable for that tendency. Although one would be morally culpable if one were voluntarily to entertain homosexual temptations or to choose to act on them, simply having the tendency is not a sin…. Simply possessing such inclinations does not constitute a sin, at least to the extent that they are beyond one’s control.”

Well this is just the point, isn’t it? Agreed, it is the sin not the sinner the Catholic Church have a problem with, but the point here, surely, is that the church have still ordained that gay intimacy is “disordered”. Homosexual tendancy or inclination (where do they get these words from?) is something we are born with in exactly the same way as a straight tendancy. This means gay people are made in the image of God in the same way. The same ability to love, to raise children, to exercise faith and contribute to a community. So what’s going on? Is God saying you can have the sexual feelings I created you to have but not fulfil them? Come on Rome, come on Canterbury, get real with your theology and don’t make being gay look like one of God’s horrible little jokes, because that’s what you’re doing.
