Nick, you’ve got your work cut out! You’re gonna have to work damned hard in the coming days and weeks to force the Tory party’s old dinosaurs to vote in favour of Marriage Equality. But do try!
Well said Nick, supporting marriage equality and individual liberty are not inconsistent with the values of any party that espouses the idea of small government and individual responsibility..
One of the most reasoned, well-written articles I’ve seen on the subject. Well done, Nick Herbert. He echoes what I’ve been saying for years when he refers to heterosexuals being told that they can’t marry but would have to settle for a Civil Partnership.
He is also right saying Civil Marriage redefined marriage, especially when divorced heterosexuals who are denied a religious marriage are now able to remarry without any religious involvement. Further proof just how religious denominations discriminate against divorced heterosexuals because of a belief system.
You might have published the full list of names, together with a link to the Sunday Telegraph article !
It’s also great to see Boris being so pro-active, because in the past he’s been accused of being at best lukewarm. Not any more !

Well done Nick Herbert
“We must conduct this debate in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding, and with regard to the special value of religious institutions.”
When they show us some respect and understanding we might consider it. Then it could be mutual.
But religion by it’s very nature does not show respect for others but it does demand respect for itself.
“the Coalition for Marriage claimed that churches might no longer marry people at all.”
Great news, the churches will be even less busy than they are now and will lose a huge slice of their income. Bring it on.
Best reason FOR gay marriage I have heard.
Plus, it will make it easier to abolish religious marriages and introduce civil marriage as the only valid marriage, identical to the French model. They don’t realise what they might be wishing for by being so obsintately opposed. I can’t imagine that there aren’t any among the hierarchy who don’t see the larger picture, especially the new Arbchbishop of Canterbury who wants greater dialogue and outreach with the LGBT community.
…obstinately opposed I meant…
Quite a few people have suggested a legal, civil ceremony for all followed by a religious ceremony/blessing for those who want it. Sounds like a great idea.
What I strongly urge is for everyone to write to the Lords. The C4M hate group have been contacting them in droves for many months. It is vital, crucial that we all let the upper chamber know that we demand equal marriage and the reasons why. Don’t let the hatemongers bully or threaten them. Instead of venting your frustration on PN, do something constructive by contacting the Lords. I’ve received 11 positive responses. We need a massive writing campaign to let them know just how much and how important this is to us.
Where is StonewallUK in all this? Not a word since the consultation began. Why have they been so complacent and so apathetic? Why aren’t they countering the right wing nutters and why aren’t they organising a write in campaign to the Lords?
Mr. Herbert write, that some opponents of same-sex marriage are ‘not homophobic, but have profound religious convinction of nature of marriage’. Who good, that exist such thing like irony (‘mascerade’ in the ancient Greek)!
I love Nick Herbert and want to marry him. Get rid of that vet (or whatever he is) you are shacked up with and run off with me to Canada or South Africa man, now you are not knocking around with the police any more.
