Colombian senator: Same-sex marriage would lead to bestiality or necrophilia
When Colombia’s Congress took its first step towards legalising same-sex marriage this week, Senator Edgar Espíndola reacted by saying the measure would open the way towards necrophilia, bestiality and paedophilia.
On Tuesday, the senator said: “Today in the world there are many countries where bestiality is practically a sexual preference for some, or necrophilia, or paedophilia”.
He added: “We can’t copy those models,” as he lamented the trend towards “modernism” in other countries, reported the El Tiempo newspaper.
Colombia’s proposed equal marriage law, which was approved by 10 votes to five on Tuesday, will now face a vote in the Colombian Senate before passing to the House.
Last year, Colombia’s constitutional court set a deadline for lawmakers to act on the issue.
The court ruled that the Colombian Congress must create an equivalent of marriage for gay couples by 20 June 2013.
On Tuesday, some were angry that Mr Espíndola’s comments received so much attention.
Colombian political analyst Claudia López tweeted: “Today’s headline is that by 10 votes to five, gay marriage was approved for the first time in the Senate, not that Espíndola said another stupid thing!”
