I’m not so sure, I’ve often remarked on women whose attractiveness for non-gay men I can readily understand – what’s so odd about that? It doesn’t take all that much imagination, does it?

I think his comments were well meant. Many men won’t be drawn on these matters. It was a Gay friendly thing to say. Shame about the bitchy comments above.
I know straight guys who readily admit the fanciability of other guys – and it’s always the ones who are totally gay-friendly. They know they can see it even if they don’t particularly feel it. The annoying ones are the uptight homophobes who pretend they have no idea. The interesting thing is the homophobic straight women who freely acknowledge beautiful women. I suppose it must be because of persistent sexism – women are still not seen as primarily sexual, except as objects of male interest.
