  1. Can they not have options for the marriage certificates? Husband and wife, husbands, wives OR spouses A & B (for those who are genderqueer or don’t wish to use the traditional terms). Many LGBT people actually do want the state to recognise their union as husbands or wives.

  2. expect opponents of equal marriage to jump on this story

Par for the course. They clutch at the most trivial of straws. As if changing the wording is going to affect their marriages. I think we in the UK should just leave it alone. Two men or two women marrying are simply both husbands or wives. It doesn’t change anything least of all the traditional terminology. Just issue a certificate with a provision included for a same-sex couple. It doesn’t have to say partner, spouse A and B either. Husband and wife, husband and husband, wife and wife can all be on the same certificate. I don’t see what the difficulty is all about.

  3. This is what the Christian.org.uk website says if you look at the link.

“The state began changing the legal document wording before the pubic vote even happened, according to a spokesman.”

I love that Freudian slip about a PUBIC vote.

    Tells you so much!

  4. Of course the christian institute forgets that marriage certificates are legal state documents, not church property.

  5. Very few, even of the older generation, refer to husband and wife. Most say my partner. Why not just use Partner A and Partner B

  6. I’m 69, in a 27 year relationship, and I’m still astonished at how fast this has moved in the past ten years – all over the world. Thanks to our activists everywhere! BTW, I’m beginning to introduce my partner as “my husband”, even though Australia doesn’t have same-sex marriage yet! :-)
