An 18-year-old man has been charged with a violent attack on a lesbian in Mobile County, Alabama.

The incident happened last Thursday on America’s Thanksgiving Day.

Authorities are still to confirm details but family and friends of the victim, Mallory Owens, believe it was a hate crime and are not happy that suspect Travis Hawkins Jr, 23, is only facing a charge of second-degree assault.

He is currently out on bail.

Activists and friends of Ms Owens have taken to Facebook to share their horror at the assault.

Ms Owens has reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries including bleeding of the brain and skull fractures.

She has already had to endure reconstructive facial surgeries because of her crushed cheek bones, according to Yahoo Voices, who say that Ms Owens is also a mother.

Queerty reports that Hawkins is the brother of the victim’s girlfriend.

It currently remains unclear what provoked the assault.
