Lindsay Lohan has said in an interview that her relationship with Sam Ronson was “toxic” and she struggled with the fact that it was her first lesbian relationship.

The actress and singer, 26, said in an interview with Us Weekly, that she had personal issues which affected her relationship with DJ Sam Ronson, and that the pair are now friends:

“I need to love myself first before I could be with anyone else, and I was going through a lot,

“Two toxic people cannot be together. End of story. We’re friends now. That’s how it started so I think that’s how it was meant to be.”

The Mean Girls star said that she struggled with the extra media attention because it was her first same-sex relationship, and that she was left heartbroken:

“I was bold enough to say, ‘Yeah I like a girl. And?’ That put her in a situation where she was being attacked every day,” she said.

“That’s not fair. And what am I left with? Heartbreak. That was three years ago. It was my last serious relationship.”

Ms Lohan also blamed her run-ins with the law, saying she didn’t realise that she had become lonely, and had returned to New York to be with family:

“Kids go through ups and downs, try drugs, cigarettes and drinking. It’s human nature.

“It took a while but it’s like “What was I thinking? Why did I allow so many sycophants and bad influences to be around me?

“I was lonely and didn’t realise it. That’s why I came back home to New York. I never feel lonely there. I see my family and have really good people in my life.”

Following constant rumours about their relationship, with everyone from Ms Lohan’s father to the Los Angeles chief of police publicly airing their views, Ms Lohan confirmed she and Ms Ronson were a couple in 2008.

She later said she didn’t identify as lesbian, bisexual or straight, saying she didn’t know how she might feel in the future.
