It’s been announced that Jonathan Harvey’s classic gay play, Beautiful Thing, will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year with a new UK-wide tour.

The Coronation Street writer is also set to be reunited with the soap’s former actress Suranne Jones, who is set to star in a brand new production at the Arts Theatre in London’s West End from 13 April – 25 May 2013.

The tour will then visit Liverpool, Leeds and Brighton.

Beautiful Thing was famously made into a film in 1996 and went on to gross £1.93 million at the box office.

Set in London’s Thamesmead estate, it’s an urban love story between two young men.

Jonathan Harvey wrote Beautiful Thing at the age of 24.

It premiered at the Bush Theatre in 1993 and sold out its five-week run before transferring to the Donmar Warehouse, and then the Duke of York’s, eventually winning its author an Olivier Award nomination and the John Whiting Award.

Along with writing for ITV’s Coronation Street, Harvey is best known for penning the BBC comedy hit series Gimme Gimme Gimme.
