  1. Oh FFS, many young gay men do refer to themselves as twinks! One Direction at present would be in that category if they were gay. He is also not insinuating that they are.

Would People be complaining if he were referring to older, hairier men as bears? I doubt it very much

    1. Miguel Sanchez 14 Nov 2012, 3:45pm

Can’t figure out why they got their knickers in a twist, they all do look like Twinks. I’ve never associated the tem with being gay however but if they are, all the better.

  2. I have never met anyone who didn’t appreciate being called a twink – in this youth obsessed culture people take any compliment they can get! I thought ‘twink’ just meant young, smooth, cute?

    1. There is also an implication of shallowness or stupidity, and that someone is worth a one-night-stand but not a real relationship. A rather backhanded compliment.

  3. Since when was “twink” derogatory? This kind of confected outrage is ridiculous.

    1. Since it was coined to mean someone that is a delicious sexual object with no substance.

      1. sort of like.. One Direction? though in that case it’s a musical object with no substance.

      2. Like those who are chosen to form boybands, for example?

  4. Moving on….nothing to see here…..

  5. What do we do with “Lolita” then? or a cougar? Or British girl’s school uniforms? Entertainment industry is based on pussy-cock magnet types from like for ever. Get over it. It is their music and the way they are exploited that is offensive.

  6. David Nottingham 14 Nov 2012, 10:34am

    Who are “One Direction” anyway?

    1. Excellent, a Pinknews contributor with a life! bravo

    2. ...Paddyswurds 14 Nov 2012, 11:35am

      @David Nottingham…
… If your comment is serious, you really ought to get out more. One Direction are all over the place and you would need to be blind and deaf not to have heard of them and seen them plastered all over every newspaper and TV screen in the entire world with the possible exception of Antarctica. If you were being flippant you failed miserably and only served to paint yourself as a hateful old fuddy who hate youth. Grow up ffs!

      1. David Nottingham 14 Nov 2012, 2:30pm

….Its a shame you failed to see the irony in my comment. Ah well, obviously way above your head. And for the record, I am not old (in fact I often describe myself as a 26 yr old “twink”, but I do ensure I don’t have a silly hair-do, which more than can be said for Harry “inaptly-named” Styles..)
        Sorry, couldn’t resist!

      2. de Villiers 14 Nov 2012, 3:55pm

      3. It is also eminently possible to have had every reason to know about this (or any other) boyband without ever, as an adult, having the slightest interest in such specimens, and therefore not retaining such useless knowledge. (That’s my excuse, anyway.)

In this instance I’d suggest it’s you who might need to grow up. There’s no reason a grown man should be interested in the objects of teenage girls’ fantasies.

        1. ...Paddyswurds 14 Nov 2012, 9:23pm

AS they are plastered all over the media and one is observant hardly makes one “interested” in the object of teenage girls (and boys) dreams. one is merely observant in all that goes on around one and is not sleepwalking through life as seems to be that case of those who commented on my post and who took the opportunity to mark me down because I happen to be observant. As one of the said twinks is Irish that also makes one observe and admire a 19 year old who seems to have his head well screwed on. And so what if i am aware of a “boy band “, it hardly makes me a perv as seem to be implied by your hateful comment. All admiration is not sexual as you imply yours is also by your comment.

        2. ...Paddyswurds 14 Nov 2012, 9:37pm

As all are at least nineteen why not pray?.
I see nothing wrong in retaining all info, trivial or else, that enters ones head. It doesn’t take any effort after all …well for me anyway, but that is obviously not the case with you and the 24 idiots who marked my wholly inoffensive remarks down…. David Nottingham also needs to learn about irony and its usage…is he American I wonder?

          1. If you think these boys being over the age of consent is the only issue here, it’s not really worth discussing further.

          2. There was no irony I could detect in your comment, Paddy. Just curmudgeonly – and possibly drunk – ranting.

          3. ...Paddyswurds 16 Nov 2012, 1:51pm

            @Cal ..
…so you think racism is more desirable than the usage of the word Twink… And to debunk your ignorant “John Bull” type racism, all Irish men are not drunks. There are more Teetotallers in Ireland than any other country on the planet…. I have yet to taste alcohol.

  7. Here we go again – liberal ‘breeders’ over reacting to a slang term that offends no one – except those who are obsessed with Gay Culture and the people who exist in it –

Young gay men use ‘Twink’ as a tag to describe themselves in this vocabulary ‘light’ world.

    1. “Breeders”? Isn’t that a derogatory term for heterosexual people? Is it really possible to challenge anti-gay language while feeling it is ok to use anti-straight language?

  8. Had to laugh when I saw this. Nothing more to say really.

  9. Suddenly Last Bummer 14 Nov 2012, 11:19am

I am actually more offended when I see One Direction described as ‘singers’.

    1. Michael Breen 15 Nov 2012, 11:11am

What do these boys share between themselves and no one else?
      1 erection!

  10. ...Paddyswurds 14 Nov 2012, 11:29am

Seems to me the PC queens are always looking for something to biatch about. if I were in One Direction and trousering the kind of money they are I would be flattered, and lets be frank here, they ARE your classic “twink” looking boys. Somehow I don’t think we will be hearing any complaints from them….. Westlife were often referred to as twinks in their early days and they didn’t complain because most of these boy bands appreciate their huge Gay following which swells their coffers considerably. Indeed it is often their Gay fans that give these boys the leg up they need at the beginning.

  11. The word twink is derogatory?!? That’s ridiculous. I swear, these permenantly offended people need to go live in a cave.

  12. Oh, get over yourselves! There is and never was anything derogatory about being called a ‘twink’. I wish I had been one… Unless of course you’re hiding in the closet, and are offended by people knowing you’re gay. And I have never heard of the so-called young-boy-old-man connotation with the word. Now if I called you a bunch of talentless hacks would you be offended?

  13. “twinks” — a word that is sexually derogatory to many young gay men — might shock or offend a lot of people, even by the most liberal of standards.”

“shock or offend a lot of people” oh come on get a life, who are these lots of people who are so easily offended? The term twink is used regularly not just in conversation but also in the media and i’ve never heard of anyone having a problem with it, it’s not a derogatory term

  14. Robert in S. Kensington 14 Nov 2012, 12:18pm

Making mountains out of mole hills. I see nothing derogatory in the term “twink”. I’d be flattered if someone called me that and I’m old enough to be their grandfather. Political correctness is really beyond the pale at times.

  15. Objectification is never a good thing

    1. True, but boybands would hardly exist without it, would they?

      1. And thats a bad thing?

        1. Well maybe not in my opinion, but I hardly think that’d be a majority view!

  16. Never heard of these people but they look like twinks to me. Now if Mr. Cohen had referred to Mr. Jagger as “rough trade,” well …

  17. This reminds me of that old TV Show catchphrase “Say what you see”

  18. I told police, they buried it 14 Nov 2012, 1:02pm

According to Devon & Cornwall Police CID a ‘twink’ is a person under 27yrs old, but over age of consent of 18, therefore to them child porn. (That was in 2005, yes I know the age of consent at 16 came into affect in 2001, but Cornwall police are more than just a bit homophobic & backward).

At least thats what a homophobe from CID said about a nude (but not sexual)photo taken of my x-partner a few years ago when he was 27yrs old.

But what can you expect from rank homophobes in police uniforms

    1. Sweet & Tender Hooligan 14 Nov 2012, 4:05pm

Off the pigs. Free Dale Cregan!

  19. I’d love to be called a twink, alas those days are gone.

    1. Exactly. I remember one friend who is my age remark, “Sigh, I’m not a twink anymore.”

    2. I wish I could be called a twink…. alas chocolate is my undoing….

  20. Christopher in Canada 14 Nov 2012, 1:57pm

I thought the offending term was “chicken”.

  21. Paul Essex/London 14 Nov 2012, 2:04pm

1D have enjoyed unprecedented success due to their sex appeal and not just to females under 18 – just look at all those mothers gleefully volunteering to accompany their daughters to 1D’s concerts. Would anyone have been so scornful if a similar comment was made by an older woman?

  22. Non story .

  23. Dangermouse 14 Nov 2012, 3:22pm

Twinks????? surely it should have been Twats !

  24. Not being an expert on gay slang, I didn’t think that twink made any assumptions about sexual orientation, that it was more about form. Indeed, I thought it was much like its source “twinkie” – sexless or nearly so! Wiktionary seems to take this more neutral approach.

  25. ..this pop group of young males follow the rules, there is nothing unusual about them. Their purpose is to get as many female fans as possible–even though 2 or more are possibly Gay how are we going to find that out?

  26. Well I certainly would if they asked me, so I guess they must be – given that twinks are just about the only type of man I find sexually attractive.

Excuse me while I go and do appalling things to my life-sized Justin Bieber sex doll.

  27. john lyttle 14 Nov 2012, 3:53pm

What’s six inches and goes in one direction?

    Simon Cowell’s cock.

    1. Mister Fister 14 Nov 2012, 4:25pm

Excellent joke! It made me laugh but obviously didn’t appeal to the misery guts who marked it down. Killjoy!

      1. john lyttle 15 Nov 2012, 7:22pm

Heaven forbid we should a sense of humour, hey?

  28. “Twinks?” Isn’t the wrong word for them? More like “idiots.”

  29. I think you’re all missing the point, The article about one 1 Direction whispering/’kissing’ to another on stage, usually shows up as the most read article on Pink News, so another article about 1 Direction, that also has the full names of the band members is going to show up in google searches for ‘One Direction’ and generate lots of hits.

or am I being very cynical and naughty for suggesting such a thing?

  30. BruceWillisFan 14 Nov 2012, 5:41pm

Who cares all members of One Direction are hot FACT & I would love to see them as twinks along with Jedward, Cole & Dylan Sprouse & the Hardy Boys. ;)

    1. Spanner1960 14 Nov 2012, 6:46pm

Oh I remember those classics. “Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys”.

  31. Spanner1960 14 Nov 2012, 6:45pm

Just a good job he didn’t call them ‘chicken’ then. :)

  32. I had a twink once, she was a lvl 19 hunter with full Blackened Defias gear and maxed enchants, she rocked in pvp.

  33. Forgive my ignorance, but in what possible way are members of boybands not twinks? I thought it was part of the job description?

  34. Brett Gibson 14 Nov 2012, 8:23pm

They’re all over the age of 18 aren’t they. I bet if a woman had made similar comments they’re wouldn’t be this back lash. ffs, some people are twinks, get over it!

  35. .br.own..fing.ered..fidd.ler.,., 14 Nov 2012, 11:21pm

I thought twinks was a chocolate bar. Obviously, the homosexuals have another kind of chocolate in mind

    1. Thank you for reading and taking the time to submit your revealing (as always) comment to a website for homosexuals. Do you eat chocolate bars yourself, or just the substitute that you’re so obsessed with?

      1. .br.own..fing.ered..fidd.ler.,., 15 Nov 2012, 10:16am

This is an website for all deviants, not just homosexuals. It is also for the trans disorder community, the bi-confused community, and also of interst to the sc@t’ community who are disproportionately homosexual.

        1. I bow to your evidently greater knowledge and experience of that latter ‘community.’ I find your tastes repellent – but you enjoy that, don’t you? Bless you, poor little thing.

    2. Spanner1960 15 Nov 2012, 1:48am

No dear, those are Twinkies, and they don’t have chocolate in them.
As a matter of fact, they are full of cream.

  36. I looked up the actual definition of the word ‘twink’ It said ‘See One Direction’

  37. tomchicago01 14 Nov 2012, 11:58pm

I was surprised to find the term described as derogatory. I was also surprised to see the claim that “twinks” are “used as sex objects by older gay men”. I would not be particularly surprised to find that the author of the Examiner piece was 1) guessing, and 2) under some kind of pressure to puff up some controversy.

    1. …and the author was 3) a woman, so maybe not as familiar with the term.

  38. Justusboyz 15 Nov 2012, 1:31am

Twink= gay slang term for young or young looking men. Simples
