San Diego’s mayor is in favour of marriage equality even though he is a Republican so why should the city’s university have a problem with it?

    1. You didn’t read the article, did you.

It isn’t the city’s university, it is a private Catholic university. So the issue is Vatican bigotry being heavily pushed down everywhere.

GingerlyColors, it’s because a catholic university has God in the mix! Their beliefs are supposed to trump everyone else’s who differs. So much for their defenders admonishing reasoned debate instead of “insults” (Alex Salmond comes to mind) and yet taking umbrage when we use the term “bigot”. This case is a brilliant example of its application.

You are right. I believe that education, like politics should be kept separate from religion. Religion belongs in the home and the church while education should be able to allow people to make up their own minds and make their choices in life, even if it means going against the faith they were brought up in at home.

  2. It’s good this is getting publicity. Not sure the Cult will want to be seen toback down, though.

It’s very nice to hear that a group of influential Catholics, including this theologian, wrote to the Times in favour of equality, despite aggressive action by the Vatican to suppress such views, as seen by the actions of the University.

The Vatican has returned to its old ways of the suppression of free speech and ideas that it disagrees with.

  4. Tina Beattie was one of my lecturers. She is certainly against the hierarchy of single old men making life decisions for women and families. I’m surprised they even considered her for the post.

Obviously the Church is so weak that it cannot survive dissenting voices.

In breaking news Emperor Palpatine …. sorry ….. Pope Benedict XVI …. formerly of the Hitler Youth, ordered Tina Beattie to be burned at the stake.

It is believed a crack team of Vatican storm troopers, currently working deep under cover in the US, have infiltrated diocese across the country. Blending in as harmless parish priests for many years, doing nothing out of the ordinary to attract attention to themselves, it is believed that they will imminently be taking a break from cracking young boys pelvises and building a Death Star in order to carry out the Emperor’s … sorry, the Führer’s …. sorry, the Pope’s instructions.

Ms Beattie is also believed to have once owned a black cat … or possibly it was a black car …. anyway the evidence speaks for itself.

And of course, denying this good woman a fellowship in the eyes of the roman cult wouldn’t have anything at all to do with bigotry.

The catholic hierarchy, among others, are always ranting on about respect and reasoned debate about equal marriage without resorting to what they call are insults. Why is it there’s a double standard for them and not for the rest of us? Bigotry it seems is a one way street if you happen to be religious and we’re accused of abusing freedom of religion when we retaliate.

I wish we had a similar video in the UK recorded by a prominent Tory MP, ideally Cameron.
