One of the biggest supporters of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People is singer Johnny Mathis, who came out in 1982 at a time when gay celebrities first started to appear on the scene. Therefore it seems appropiate that the NAACP should reciprocate and show support for marriage equality.
On the 6th of November it will not just be the Presidential Election that we will br watching with interest but also the referendums being held over various issues including marraige equality. As well as Maryland I believe that Washington State will also be voting on marriage equality and no doubt other states will be voting on LGBT issues, whether it is to advance equality or sadly as in the case of North Carolina, to curtile it.
The NAACP support is exactly what US pro-marriage equality campaigns need to combat NOM’s tactic to “drive a wedge” between the nation’s LGBT and Afro-American communities. I have good hopes for Maryland, Maine and Washington next month and wish them every luck.
