Oh, yes the right wing religious biggots are alive and well…so full of their venom and hatred towards anything that is noble and good…time for the usa to wake up and protect their young people from these kind of morons…

  2. Wha? Thats totally disgusting how the hell can they be so subjective on what they think is duty to God – because i tell you the scoutmaster is not doing his duty right now by bullying young people.

    1. Problem is, he doesn’t see it that way

      1. ...Paddyswurds 5 Oct 2012, 11:27am

        Bigots never do…

  3. Cardinal Capone 5 Oct 2012, 1:14am

Poor kid, learning about discrimination so young.

  4. stephanie lee 5 Oct 2012, 1:25am

Any organisation that discriminates in this way is diminishing itself and diminishing the value of any award it presents.

  5. Christopher in Canada 5 Oct 2012, 1:26am

Prayers for Bobby comes to mind – discrimination and an attack on his self-esteem, condoned by an organization that is supposed to guide young people into adulthood… shame on them. How do they sleep at night? Or are Americans truly that uneducated????

    1. Oh i know that movie makes be break my heart out every time i watch it :(.

    2. Yes americans truly are that stupid.

      1. David Myers 6 Oct 2012, 7:32am

Yes, some Americans are that stupid. Hopefully it is a decreasing minority of Americans!

  6. Christopher in Canada 5 Oct 2012, 1:28am

You do realize that this uneducated nation holds the release buttons on most of the world’s nuclear weapons…

    1. Do you possess the wit to realize that the Scouts’ attitudes and policy appall vast numbers of Americans just as much (or more) than they appall you?

Do you possess the wit to realize that you, and your easy broad brush, are laughingstocks to anyone actually familiar with the typical American?

      Eh?

      I didn’t think so.

      1. Kerry Hollowell 5 Oct 2012, 5:58am

Hi, so why do the vast majority of americans go along with this kind of thing?

      2. ...Paddyswurds 5 Oct 2012, 11:43am

        @Soren456…
…..Your comment is proof positive of what Chris in Canada said. You come across as school yard retort with out substance.
Well, I am here to tell you that I AM familiar with typical Americans, having lived there for ten years, and aside from New England, the majority of “typical” Americans are as ignorant and bigoted as any in Iran or Afghanistan. The majority of Americans are NOT appalled by the Attitude of the Scouts because if they were they would stand up and be counted. America is being turned into a theocracy right under your noses and you don’t see it because you are too busy stuffing food in your ignorant uneducated mouths to care. Food that most Europeans wouldn’t allow thrown into landfill because the chemicals and crap that in it would contaminate the environment. You can’t see that either. You rather do not possess the wit to realize that the entire world is aghast that the once most powerful country in the world has been destroyed by greed and Theism.

        1. Christopher in Canada 6 Oct 2012, 10:55pm

Paddy – I`m so glad to be of Irish descent!!!!

  7. Brown v Board of Education, 1954.
Andresen v Boy Scouts of America, 2013.

  8. Christopher in Canada 5 Oct 2012, 1:40am

To think that this uneducated nation controls most of the world’s nuclear arsenal…

  9. When are the Boy Scouts of America going to join the rest of us in the 21st century? Why can’t they be open and accepting like the Girl Scouts?

Hey BSA, I’m a transsexual woman and I was a Life Scout back in the day. Are you going to retroactively take that away from me?

    1. This is absolutely disgusting. The US always promotes itself as being better than anyone else and then you read something like this. Awful for the boy, his family, the reputation of the Scouts and the image of the entire nation. It is clearly discrimination and bullying. This would never be allowed legally or morally here in the UK or Europe. Such a sad state or affairs. When are ignorant organisations like the US Scouting movements and all the religious bigots going to enter the 21st-century?

      1. The US is no better than most Islamic states when it comes to LGBT legal matters. In many states, you can still be fired from your job for being gay without any recourse, you can be refused service in restaurants for being gay too. Yet, strangely, in some states it is perfectly legal for you to have sex with a horse! Go figure. America, land of the free……………………….my a**e

    2. ...Paddyswurds 5 Oct 2012, 11:52am

      xrk9854..
…..rather, when exactly does America join the rest of us in the 21st century. It is becoming an ignorant uneducated theist ridden country. Even democracy there is in danger from big money and the Military Industrial Complex. Even putting people in prison has become an industry, while in the meantime they have farmed out their real industry to places like China and India because most Americans are too lazy, too fat and too ignorant to run a modern industry…It is scary to know that this ignorant illiterate country has a vast nuclear arsenal that could fall into the hands of an ignorant racist theist, who wears “magic underwear” like mitt Romney…….

    3. David Myers 6 Oct 2012, 7:33am

      Don’t give them your name!

  10. Spanner1960 5 Oct 2012, 7:22am

    Appalling treatment.
I cannot find the words to show my fury at such bigoted contempt for youth.

  11. Right then, Ryan, lesson learned. Go plough your own furrow. You have the whole future in your hands: the BSA belong to the past. Change the world!

  12. America has a long way to go socially

    1. ...Paddyswurds 5 Oct 2012, 11:56am

America has been there and is now in rapid regression because of poor education, theism and religion of the most bigoted kind. I really do fear for the future of the world if this continues…..

  13. Thank goodness he has supportive parents. Good luck to you.

  14. Sick b’stards torturing this teenager, in the name of God, over his sexual orientation.

  15. All decent people involved with this dreadful organisation should withdraw their support and funding from it and openly repudiate any awards they have received from it until this iniquitous policy is publically rescinded.

  16. Unbelievable! Judging young people on their sexual orientation to see if they qualify for a Scout badge?! Vicious, spiteful, ignorant discrimination.

  17. Ryan did everything to qualify for the badge. These idiots are sending out a piss-poor message to the young scouts of the future.

    1. David Myers 6 Oct 2012, 7:37am

Thanks for posting this petition. Regardless of citizenship every person truly committed to equal rights should sign this petition and share it. I already have. Like Spanner says, show this lad our support!

  18. A sad aspect of this incident is that the Andresens apparently believed that the BSA’s rules would not apply to Ryan, although the organisation has made its policy perfectly clear.

Presumably Ryan and his family couldn’t believe that his troop would be so cruel as to enforce the rules.

But rules penalising gays aren’t just used for hurting other people. They hurt all of us. No matter how well we live our lives, anti-gay rules can and will be used against us.

I hope more current and former GBT Scouts will take a stand and quit this homophobic organisation, rather than waiting to be kicked out as Ryan has been.

Very, very sad for those who have devoted many years to scouting. But better than living in fear, or being complicit in discrimination against children.

  19. I never knew that there was a ‘standard on sexual orientation’??? and that an organisation such as the scouts have the authority,or would even contemplate award denial, based on sexual orientation. The major political problem in America, and one that will proberbly NEVER be discussed in the run up to the Presidential election, is the fact that America is no longer United. Its a collection of broken disconected authoritian states each with thier own biased agenda that allows this type of blatent discrimination to take place in the first place. A shocking but sadly predictable outcome of such a political system. The shame goes beyond the Scouts or any organisation that discriminates. Its the discriminatory shame of a nation.

  20. I would hope that the world scouting organisation removed the american scout’s membership for their evil, inhumane practices.

  21. ...Paddyswurds 5 Oct 2012, 2:44pm

@Soren456s comment is proof positive of what ChrisinCanada said. You come across as school yard retort without substance.

    1. Spanner1960 5 Oct 2012, 8:24pm

Yeah, and the Irish are all as thick as pigsh|t.
Go spout your bigoted, racist generalisations elsewhere.

      1. Christopher in Canada 6 Oct 2012, 10:59pm

My, what a fine, non-racist, non-nationalist thing to say!!! (NOT). As I am the son of a mechanic, you shame me by claiming to know how a wrench works. Your posts repeatedly reveal you to be ignorant, bitter and lonely, do you realize that?

  22. The UK Scout Movement isn’t much better. Their website says that atheism along with paedophilia is a bar to leadership and doesn’t even mention LGBT!
    http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/library/hqdocs/facts/pdfs/fs500005.pdf

    1. To be fair, in the document you link to it does refer to ‘sexual status’ as being one of grounds on which discrimination is for bidden (in their Equal Opportunities policy), which, while somewhat coy, in context I think can only refer to sexual orientation. You’re right about the atheism for leaders though…..-

      1. It says Marital or sexual status. I presumed it meant ‘living together.’ Not saying LGBT in this day and age is very bizarre. And lumping atheism with paedophilia as a bar to leadership is completely offensive.

    2. “No young person should receive less favourable treatment on the basis of, nor suffer disadvantage by reason of: … political or religious belief.
… With reference to religious belief, the avowed absence of religious belief is a bar to appointment to a Leadership position.”

      Isn’t that contradictory?

  23. Andreas Danil 5 Oct 2012, 4:20pm

Although never a scout myself I have many friends who were. The scouting movement in the UK is fully committed to the equality of all it’s members. As an international organisation it would be interesting to know whether the UK scouting movement has made any public comment on the discriminatory policies of it’s American brothers.

  24. Sundancer 5 Oct 2012, 4:24pm

I’m a proud Eagle Scout. I’m also a proud gay man. The former was instrumental in helping me become the later. The national org in Dallas has ruined a once great institution.

  25. Tom Cotner 5 Oct 2012, 4:35pm

As I exited WalMart yesterday, I was accosted by a number of boy scouts and their leaders, wanting donations. I told them “no” – and that I do not give to bigots.
They looked at me as though I had said I was from Mars. They had not one clue over what I was talking about.
I just don’t give to them – or to any other organization which supports them.
(Not that WalMart is any better – but it’s the nearest place I can buy cat food).

    1. Good for you! Maybe instead of referring to them as bigots you could have said “I don’t not give to organisations that discriminate”.

  26. Somewhat ironic considering Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement, was as gay as they come..

    1. Spanner1960 5 Oct 2012, 8:26pm

      WHAT!!??
Where did you glean that little nugget of complete dogpoo from?

      1. Perhaps ‘gay as they come’ was an exaggeration – but the evidence suggests ‘more gay than straight’ would be a reasonable supposition: http://pierrejoubert.blogspot.co.uk/2005/11/baden-powell-and-boy-scouts.html.

    2. Guglielmo Marinaro 5 Oct 2012, 9:25pm

From what I’ve heard and read, Baden-Powell was not gay, but a neurotic who had a problem with sexuality in any shape or form.

    3. There were rumours going the rounds a few years ago about him being gay. It didn’t help that he wrote a book called “Scouting For Boys” :)
I don’t think the stories were substantiated, though.

  27. Guglielmo Marinaro 5 Oct 2012, 9:27pm

So a particular sexual orientation is a “standard” which needs to be met? It just shows you the perverted way that these crackpots think.

  28. Maybe he should come and join us in the UK scouts. Anyone and everyone is welcome, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, colour, religion, nationality. The BSA have a bit to learn on equality!

  29. Douglas in Canada 7 Oct 2012, 11:49pm

It’s nice to read the following question and answer on the Scouts Canada website:

“Are Homosexuals Allowed to Join Scouts Canada? ”

“Scouts Canada does not discriminate for reasons of gender, culture, religious belief or sexual orientation.”

  30. How disgusting and cruel.

  31. So for any scout out there that has already gained an ‘Eagle’ badge……?

A 100% win claim for discrimination me thinks?

Anything to stop those evil gay feelings… Blimey, when will this nonsense stop? Next, we’ll be denied access to buses or trains…..
