Perhaps Berlin is less of an adventurous place to visit since the reunification of Germany. The city was right on the frontline during the Cold War and West Berlin was an island of freedom in a sea of oppression. We must look to the future, however and Germany is now one of the most gay friendly destinations in Europe and the Museum of Homosexuality in Berlin will be on my list of places to visit should I ever get round to visiting.
I did make a brief visit to (West) Germany when I was in Luxembourg with the Scouts in 1979. We went over the border to Trier, which I must admit is a bit of a boring place to visit.
Weird that the picture uses people in Bavarian Tracht with Bavarian flags in the background (even if the man’s lederhosen says “Berlin”).
Chipsy (above) says he thinks Berlin is the most boring city in Europe. I presume he has not been in quite a while. I would have said that since about 2008 Berlin has easily become the edgiest most exciting city in Europe, easily surpassing London now.
Prior to that it was always beset by poverty but nonetheless had attracted a vast population of artists, poets and musicians with its extremely low cost of living. As that community has matured it has led to an enormous flowering of creativity in what is arguably now the most important city in the EU.
Chipsy, do go back and in particular do go to East Berlin.
I’ve just returned from a trip to Berlin and I boring is far from what Berlin is. There are a ton of things to do and the city is so cool and laidback. I can’t wait to return.
However I don’t think it’s edgier than London – our cosmopolitan makeup and diversity still give us the edge. But I think the two cities have a lot in common, especially in terms of creativity.

Just thought I’d warn people that there is some sort of malware on the comments section of PN.
Why does everyone hype Berlin? It’s probably one of the most boring cities in Europe.

Funnily enough, if we danced round in leather shorts, slapping each other’s bottoms, we would be arrested for indecency here in the UK!
