  1. and yet the Catholic bishops in Australia heap praise on the liberal party over in Australia for not allowing their MPs a conscience vote on SSM…….funny how they like to criticise something which doesn’t fit the catholic christian agenda but remain quiet when it doesn’t suit them…

    1. Don’t forget that as far as the catholic church – and other homophobic religious organisations – is concerned, the fight against SSM is a war. They will use whatever weapons and tactics they have to hand to fight to maintain their power over peoples lives. For what will happen when SSM is with us? Nothing apart from more happy married gay people and their families – and the catholic hierarchy will have egg on its collective face for being shown up as liars.

    2. time to abort the church – of AH of germany, his #2
Himmler, Dr. Mengele, Eichmann, and Goebbels

      All went to catholic schools.

  2. Back to the Vatican you go, Bishop Devine. Stop interfering in matters that do not concern you. Drinking alcohol and driving do not mix, oil and water do not mix and neither does religion and politics, Stay out and keep out before you are thrown out!

  3. Equality first. Wouldnt be happy if someone was against rights for non-whites because of “conscience” would they?

  4. Jason Bird 24 Sep 2012, 1:25pm

Que another death nail being hammered into the Catholic church’s coffin by one of its out of touch Bischops

  5. Read the original story bish.

The silly bint was expelled as she publicly went against party policy.
Policies which she signed up to in order to be elected councillor.

In essence she LIED to the voters who made her councillor.

And PS Bish, read your bible also:

Leviticus 6:1-4, “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and lie unto his neighbour…or hath deceived his neighbour…and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein: Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty,”

If lying is no longer a problem in Leviticus then neither is being gay.

    1. Spanner1960 24 Sep 2012, 2:08pm

Um, she didn’t lie. She just didn’t follow their rules.
QED the Greens had every right to give her the elbow.

      1. She agreed to the manifesto which INCLUDED equal marriage.

        Ergo, she lied.

  6. bobbleobble 24 Sep 2012, 1:31pm

As usual these religious people bear false witness by distorting the facts. She wasn’t booted from the Greens because she doesn’t support gay people marrying, she was booted because she breached an electoral promise that she signed prior to her election which therefore meant that she lied to her electorate. The content of that pledge is largely irrelevant, it’s the breach of it that matters.

  7. ” gay agenda ?”
Silly me I thought it was about equal rights.

    1. Spanner1960 24 Sep 2012, 2:09pm

I think you will find that is the same thing a lot of the time.
If it means I want to marry my partner, then yes, I have an ‘agenda’.

  8. I’m just wondering Bishop Devine, what would be the catholic church’s reaction to a priest who openly spoke out in support of ay marriage and maybe even provided blessings to gay couples?

  9. Sadly-looks like the Green Party has been “set up’ by the Christiofascists.
They should have seen this coming.
    Next stop-the courts!

I find it amazing that a catholic cleric, a representative of a foreign potentate and foreign cult based in Rome is allowed to meddle in the civil internal affairs over the sovereignty of the UK. In another time, it would have been construed as sedition and punishable by execution. If anyone has an agenda, it’s the religious cults in opposition, particular the roman variety and that agenda is to subvert government legislation and enshrining into law, discrimination. The roman cult seems to have ignored the reformation and the consequences which caused its demise as the state cult. It had better be careful what it wishes for.

Sorry Bishop Devine, I believe Stonewall have already chosen their nominations for the bigot of the year award. Your colleagues O’Brien and Tartaglia being front runners. (It’s a one horse race really, well done O’Brien)

Carry on with your homophobia and your holocaust denial and better luck next year.

    1. GulliverUK 24 Sep 2012, 3:31pm

I can’t think of anyone more worthy of the award than O’Brien — he outshone all his competitors, and made the CoE look like a bunch of peace-loving hippies ! :D

  12. James Komar 24 Sep 2012, 4:11pm

Bishop Devine condemns those who seek to coerce party loyalty at the expense of loyalty to one’s conscience. Has he ever examined the record of his own church?

  13. She was booted out because she told lies. She broke her contract. She is guilty of bearing false witness. She used the green party to get into politics because she knew she would never have been elected otherwise.

  14. Dear Bishop
If you want to enter the political arena, then by all means do so … BUT do so honestly. First, give up your preferential tax treatment as a church, and then argue all you like!!
And while you’re at it – could you concentrate a little more energy cleaning up your own organisation!!!!

  15. That There Other David 24 Sep 2012, 6:24pm

It’s bad enough that an old celibate fool on a hill in Rome thinks he should make decisions for the UK and France, but when another old celibate fool in Scotland thinks he can decide who can join a Brighton political party you know the Vatican has gone truly loopy-tunes.

I wonder how far the equality ride has to go before these men actually explode with rage :-D

  16. Mumbo Jumbo 24 Sep 2012, 6:24pm

He was much better back in the 80s :-)

What’s actually quiet funny is that Christina Summer’s most likely wouldn’t set foot in a Catholic institutition/church as she’s of the view that women are equal to men. While I, and I’m sure most like-minded contributors on this site would agree with this equality, Bishop Devine and his fellow sombre-suited, often seen wearing frocks colleauges, would not be in agreement.

For in the Catholic Church, traditional marriage means for mothers to stay at home, cook, clean, raise children and wash the dirty underpants of their husbands.

I’ve listened to Christine Summers and much as I dislike/differ in her views on same-sex marriage, she isn’t the type of women that the Catholic Church would usually suppport – neither is the Catholic Church the type of institution she would support.

Isn’t it wonderful how mutual hatred and prejudice can bring about peace between two parties who would normally be at war with each other.

  18. Paddyswurds 24 Sep 2012, 10:49pm

What a mix, Scottish, religious and a bishop to boot…what do you expect ? Rational thought? Dream on …more like drug or drink addled rants is all you’ll get from that quarter.

    1. Scottish people aren’t more bigoted than English, Irish or Welsh people. In fact, Scotland has led or went further than the rest of the UK on gay equality since the Scottish Parliament was set up – Sect. 28 (Clause 2a), hate crime legislation, equal marriage to name a few. The one time the Scottish gov got it totally wrong and didn’t go as far as England & Wales was over catholic adoption agencies, but nobody seems to be interested in that.

  19. Conservatives of any kind despise the Greens worldwide! That is why I vote for the Greens!

  20. Bishop Devine you are brilliant – we love you! With no sense of irony you tell us that “To seek to coerce loyalty to the party above loyalty to individual conscience calls to mind the worst kind of totalitarian politics.” Exactly what your Church does every day! What a person you are. A clown “masquerading” as a man of compassion.

    1. I’ve just noticed that you beat me to it!!
I suppose the guy’s hypocrisy is pretty blatant.

  21. “To seek to coerce loyalty to the party above loyalty to individual conscience calls to mind the worst kind of totalitarian politics.”
It calls to mind the Roman Catholic Church, actually.

  22. PeterinSydney 25 Sep 2012, 11:01am

Once again a Catholic Bishop is so obsessed by marriage equality issues that he has lost what he should be doing as a Christian.

  23. No wonder he seems to find it difficult to understand that a group can be concerned about more than one issue – religions have been obsessing about the one issue of LGBT people for years and can’t think of anything else.

    1. Very good point, Iris!

  24. its time to abort the church – of AH of germany, his #2
Himmler, Dr. Mengele, Eichmann, and Goebbels

    All went to catholic schools.
