Pink News should post the reply to the Maryland representative in question by Chris Kluwe, another American football player. It’s hilarious

It was the best response I have ever seen. Forget football. Kluwe needs to be in politics.

A few more delightful responses to Mr. Burns like that one, can only lead to the hope he “might” develop a conscience… better yet inferiority complex!

  3. Erm… am I missing something? What on earth has a sports player campaigning for equality got to do with a politician? Why on earth does this Emmet Burns fellow think he can request that someone be “reprimanded” because they’re standing up for a cause he doesn’t like? Does the behaviour of sportsmen come under local government control in America? Are the teams state-owned? Is there some kind of civil service chain of command in this case that I’m not aware of?

Because, if not, then where does this petty little jobsworth get off on sticking his nose in stuff that has nothing at all to do with him?

That’s the fun part… he violated the US constitution big time. Everything that is in the letter from Chris Kluwe is not only awesome, but true. By using the letterhead, threatening using his position, his constituents, and the general public fans of the Ravens to deny a player and his team their 1st amendment rights Burns opened himself up to a lot of problems. A lawsuit, should Brendon Ayanbadejo or the Ravens wish it, an ethics probe (In America, not nearly as entertaining or effective as it sounds), removal from committees he serves on or other senate punishments, punishments from the Democratic party, the scorn of everyone since he so blatantly violated the same law he uses against others, etc.

The stupidity of Burns in writing this letter and sending it is the literal meaning of mind boggling stupid. It confuses you as to why he would do this, if he have a breakdown, or if it was a hoax, because it’s hard to imagine the sheer amount of idiocy it took for this to happen.

Ah, for those of you overseas not entirely acquainted with the American political system, basically it works this way:

“Freedom of speech” is only applicable to right wing, christian fundamentalist Republicans.

“Small government” only applies when it means staying out of right wing, christian fundamentalist Republican’s affairs.

    Otherwise, SHUT THE HELL UP.

It’s a very simple system, you are either a right wing, christian fundamentalist Republican…

or you are an enemy of America.

Not, Mikey, one of your more brilliant analyses because Emmet C. Burns, Jnr. just happens to be a DEMOCRAT. Oh, he also happens to be a so-called Christian of the Bible-believing Baptist sect, so at least you were half correct. The nut-jobs, however, exist on both sides of the divide – stupidity is not the exclusive preserve of the right-wing as any, even a cursory, examination of the left and its unbelievable fantasies would easily reveal.

also, a legal note: technically, what Delegate Burns did, acting as a State representative, putting pressure on an employer to muzzle the expression of free speech of an employee, is a serious breach of the 1st Amendment.

What he did is, to the letter, EXACTLY what the 1st Amendment was written to counteract.

Kudos to Dick Cass, Steven Disciotti, and, of course, Brendon Ayanbadejo. And to Emmett C Burns, Jr I say abuse of power only works if people believe you have some. In this case you haven’t a leg to stand on and I’m sure you supporters wouldn’t want you calling their work places because of person differences of opinion.

Delegate Burns is a DEMOCRAT elected in District 10 of Baltimore, in a 3 seat district with only 3 candidates – all Democrat. He is a Baptist minister. He introduced Bill 90 which would have invalidated same-sex marriages made outside the state, so his anti-gay record is clear.

So this is not a case of Republican religious fundamentalism but Democrat – in a ‘one-party’ city (2010 Dems=70%) where electoral success is merely about how good at climbing the party’s greasy pole someone is. He shows how someone who does not really have to fight for election can be overtaken by entitlement and self-importance and so react in this ‘stalinist’ way to opposition.

If you want to learn more about politicians like him, watch The Wire.

  12. I am surprised a ‘politician’ would bring this sort of publicity upon himself especially when it comes to the Americans precious Ammendments. I wonder if he would like to repeal the 5th ammendment or perhaps he should try and repeal the 2nd ammendment which is the ‘right to bear arms’ instead of trying to score cheap points with the Equality row. Good on Brendon Ayanbadejo and the team……

    Post a reply →
  13. So a government representative is using public time/resources to dictate the actions of an employee for a private organization? Someone needs to tell Emmett C Burns Jr, that what Brendon Ayanbadejo thinks is none of his business.
