The first LGBT video game convention set to take place in 2013
A group of San Francisco based gamers have set out to create a safe and tolerant alternative to a regular video game convention, and have confirmed that they have raised enough to host the event next summer.
GaymerCon is described on Kickstarter as “the first gaming and tech convention with a focus on LGBT geek culture,” and has seen over $72,000 in support, way more than the $25,000 target.
The world of video games has been involved in controversy in the past over homophobic language used online, and even questionable themes within some games themselves.
The event has been criticised by some other gamers who claim that it creates division in the gaming world, rather than bringing people together. Matt Conn, one of those involved in organising the event responded to these claims saying:
“I don’t think that this removes them from the greater community. I think that just gives them an additional community that can be of interest,” in an interview with VentureBeat.com.
The group offers rewards of increasing value depending on how big a donation is – this goes from a pack of stickers, for a gift of $10, all the way up to a VIP booth at the convention, and prime banner space, which will set you back $6464.
According to the page, the convention will happen “no matter what” on 3-4 August 2013. The Kickstarter campaign ends in just over two days, and depending on the amount organisers raise, they will decide on a venue.
