Republican party platform would halt US hopes of marriage equality
The Republican Party today announced approval on a platform which would ban any hopes of marriage equality, and all abortions, at the GOP national convention in Tampa, Florida.
The platform announcing these approvals began with an acknowledgement that the American Dream had allowed equal opportunity, but went on to say:
“Today that American Dream is at risk.”
The harshly worded document said that the Republicans were going to “start anew”, and announced drastic changes to budget, taxation, regulation and the Medicare social insurance program.
As well as announcing that they would ban gay marriage, the national convention also saw Mitt Romney win the official Republican nomination for Presidential candidate.
The Republicans have recently been criticised from within their ranks about their stance on gay marriage. An advisor to Romney spoke out last week in opposition to an amendment which would allow civil unions, at a Republican assembly, likening being gay to drug use, and polygamy.
