Boy Scouts of America pack to stand up to anti-gay policy
A Boy Scouts of America pack in California have announced that they are to take a stand against BSA policy, which currently does not allow gay members, volunteers or staff.
Cubmaster, James Rich, of Redlands BSA pack number 24, met with parents from the Scouts group to gauge their opinion on the idea:
“I didn’t think I could continue as cubmaster until I knew our club was against [the BSA’s policy]
“So I asked our pack to have a meeting to discuss openly the pros and cons. If I was in the minority, I would step down. But at the meeting, I was not in the minority. I was in the majority.
“So we decided to move forward from there,”
Last month, The Boy Scouts of America announced it would retain its ban on gay members, volunteers and staff. A statement released by BSA said:
“While the BSA does not proactively inquire about the sexual orientation of employees, volunteers, or members, we do not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior [sic] that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA.”
