A new political action committee has been created in South Carolina to fight for equality, and to end discrimination against its LGBT residents.

The LGBT group SC Equality announced the creation of the PAC, the first of its kind in the US state, and released a statement:

“The mission of the SC Equality PAC is to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression and to ensure the dignity, safety and legal equality of all South Carolinians by working to elect fair minded candidates to office, regardless of party affiliation.

“The SC Equality PAC is currently interviewing candidates for the 2012 elections and will make endorsements and provide campaign support for candidates who seek and obtain the support of the SC Equality PAC.”

SC Equality will hold a press conference on Friday to answer possible questions on the creation of the PAC and its functions.

In 2008, a row broke out over a tube advert campaign advertising South Carolina as a gay tourist destination. The posters read “South Carolina is so gay”.

The announcement of this new PAC comes just a day after Mitt Romney’s advisor likened being gay to taking drugs and practicing polygamy.
