NZers wonder about the reasons for the change too. Maybe its because she’s met more gay people. She may have attended the civil union of National MP’s executive assistant Justin Elder to Piri Norris held in Parliament’s Legislative Council Chamber last year.

Maybe she’s just copying NZ Prime Minister John Key who is socially liberal. Key is good friends with David Cameron and they appear to consult with each other on many policy decisions.

It’s great that Judith supports marriage equality but I’m not sure about her support for other LGBT rights. For example there appears to be no movement on enabling transgender prisoners to be housed in the appropriately gendered prison unless they’re post-operative.

    1. The NZ PM should have a word with his UK opposite number about recognising the equal marriages from other countries, which NZ does already, whilst the the UK refuses, shamefully.

New Zealand recognises change of sex, so if someone is post-op they are not transgender. Defining them as such is an approach that loses people access to recognition of their new sex. Defining people as transgender for life says there is no change of sex. That’s fine for people who identify as a third gender, but not everyone.

But the rules should be more flexible to benefit transgender people, where it is assessed there is no danger to women in women’s prisons.

No amount of legitimazation will moralize what is a deeply immoral act.
homosexual acts are vile and condemned throughout scripture.
Of course, god given freewill affords people the choice to practice morality or immorality. Those that do not address their perversions (which like paedophiles they falsely claim they were born with and cannot alter) will not gain the rewards spoken of in Jesus’ sermon on the mount. They will suffer the judgement of Jude verse 7.

      1. Have you stopped beating your wife?

      2. Jane Anderson-Hawkes 21 Aug 2012, 12:03pm

So you’re comparing gay people with paedophiles. You are a sick individual! Why do perverts like you focus on sex when it comes to talking about gay people? There is nothing immoral about my daily life. I work, I pay my taxes, I bring up my children, I read, i go to the theatre. I am a mother, a sister, a partner, a daughter, worker, a friend an educationalist, a student. You getting the picture; you of the slow wits and entrenched bigotry? What i do in bed with my partner does not define me! (Oh, and it’s ‘practise’ when it’s used as a verb.)

    2. Do you still beat your wife?

    3. The ‘crime’ of Sodom and Gomorrah as stated in Jude 7 is contradicted by the one stated in Ezekiel 16:49.
And since Ezekiel is a longer book than Jude, was written at a date closer to the alleged divine exterminations than Jude was, and did not suffer from disputed authenticity as Jude was, we can assume that the words of Ezekiel are for want of better words, more valid than those of Jude.
Romans 7:6 also exempts Christians from ‘the law’ of the old testament in which homosexuality is a capital offence, to say nothing of those among us who are not Christians.

Christians areot exempt from he law regarding homosexuality any more than they are exempt from any other mosaic moral laws such as stealing or bestialiy or murder. God command moral cleanliness. at all times.
It is the mere ceremonial and statute law from which Christians are exempt.
As for the alleged contradiction, Ezekiel’s proclamation that Sodom was proud and therefore in error is in addition to her gross immorality and nowhere does it suggest otherwise. Indeed verse 47 of the chapter you cited reads “And it was not in their ways that you walked, nor according to their detestable things that you did
        “.
        Notice the word ‘detestable’?

  3. total volte-face…? Odd but better late than never, it would be nice to know the reasons for her damascene conversion- if its because shes had a genuine change of heart then wonderful, its its more political manouvres then not so impressed. Time will tell!

    1. Both are to be welcomed.

  4. Meanwhile the Australian PM – an atheist – is to be an invited speaker at the extreme right-wing fundamentalist group, the so-called Australian Christian Lobby later in the year. What a strange world we live in.

  5. Pink should would stop using the expression ‘coming out for marriage equality’.

Coming out of the closet is a brave step taken by gay people the world over.

Being in favour of marriage equality simply means being a decent human being. There is no bravery required.

We should take it s a foregone conclusion that everyone is in favour of marriage equality. And if someone sayas they are against it (for whatever reason) they should be treated as a social pariah and a freak and a bigot.

The proper headline for this story is ‘NZ politician no longer a bigot’.

  6. Well it is certainly a step in the right direction and it could gather momentum

  7. wait wait wait so your telling me that gay people dont need special rights? PAH-LEASE of course people of different sexual orientations and gender identities need special rights, simply because some places in the world especially America, have been denying people from the LGBT community the basic necessities, its as if your taking a lower class citizen and stripping him of his job and home just because he or she is lower class, lets say that he paid the bills on time, that he was commited to his job and showed up every day but then was kicked out of his apartment and fired from his work place just for being lower class, its not the same but the basic concept is still there, there were laws that had to stop slavery and now there has to be laws in order to make another group of people equal as well, again not the same the main concept is being transferring it to this topic, if I can get a logical explanation as to how im wrong i welcome it, note religion has nothing on this matter

    1. No, gay people don’t need SPECIAL rights, we just need EQUAL rights. Special Rights are Wrong !

You can’t fire someone just for being left handed (at least in the UK) but that certainly doesn’t mean that left handed people need or have special rights.

Equal rights means that you’re considered and treated no worse but no better than the next person, that’s all. That should be what we’re all fighting for.

The only exceptions should be where special rights are genuinely needed to put someone with a disability back where they would otherwise be. For example, the Motability and Blue Badge schemes help mobility impaired people to reach locations that would otherwise be accessible only to the able bodied or at high cost. That’s fair enough, otherwise Equal really must mean Equal.

Nobody has yet been able to tell me what it is that a heterosexual is allowed to do that a homo is not. Hetero normals are not allowed to marry same sex either so the inequality is in your deviant mind.

  8. Sounds like someone’s child or grandchild recently came out!

  9. And yet her openly gay co worker – ‘Honorable’ Christopher Finlayson is voting against it!
shame on him, the gay community should
    take him to the cleaners.
any guy have any dirt on him?
