Sir Elton John has spoken out about his 20-month old son’s future, and the challenges he may face as the son of a gay couple.

In an interview with Radio Times magazine, Sir Elton said he fears that his son Zachary will face taunts, and that: “At school other children will say, “you don’t have a mummy.’”

He said: “We’ve come a long way, but there’s still homophobia and will be until a new generation of parents don’t instil it in their children.”

Sir Elton,  also spoke of the difficulty Zachary may face as the son of a celebrity, and described it as a “huge ball and chain.”

Despite speaking of these fears, Sir Elton also said he was: “happier than ever,” in his family life.

Elton John and partner of 19 years, David Furnish, had Zachary in 2010 using a surrogate. Sir Elton has also said that he plans to become a father again by the end of the year.

In an February interview with Attitude magazine, the couple spoke of the “challenges” facing the family.

Their first son, Zachary, was born on Christmas Day 2010. His godmother was later confirmed to be Lady Gaga.

Of baby Zachary, Furnish tells Attitude: “I think he’s going to have a lot of attention thrust upon him.

“He’s going to be potentially doubly stigmatised, because one of his parents is extremely famous and because he comes from two dads.

“We’ve taken advice from counsellors. We’ve put a whole scrapbook together about his creation, the people who were involved in the process and how the intent was about love. We’re going to raise him to be proud of who he is.”
