  1. If he was sacked simply for being gay that’s shocking. And what on earth is his boss doing allegedly trying to push his beliefs on other people at work?

Iris, the bigots do not get you sacked for being gay, what they do is harris you and make your work enviroment very unhappy, then when you are off work more than a set time they start a process to get you dismissed, stating that you cannot cope with the type of work etc, so it looks like you were fired because you could not do your work. It is very hard to prove discrimination of this sort, but I think this person would have a strong case seeing as he took medical help.
These religious nut jobs need to learn to leave their fantasy fairy god world at home or in their church, and stop trying to force every one to follow their cult.
I grew up in the Catholic church, I will never step into a church again, they breed hate and violence.

In the UK, that’s constructive dismissal, but I don’t know if there’s any similar protection for employees in the US. I doubt it.

In the majority of states in the USA you can be fired for being gay. They don’t have to even pretend it’s for a different reason.

It’s the Land of the Free*

(*as long as you’re a rich white straight Christian male)

        1. No, you can’t.

          1. Yes…you can. Almost all U.S. states are considered “at-will” work states. You can be terminated for any reason or no reason.

          2. There is no federal protection for sexual orientation. And 30 of the States do not have state level protection either.

Really disgusting what happened to Peter TerVeer. Even more disgusting is the fact that it happened at the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States.
Just shows you that the US have still a long way to go when it comes to LGBT equality .

  4. This is so infuriating. Do people honestly think that religious freedom means you can treat others like garbage? We need to have a reality check here. We need a big national campaign in America that reminds people what religious freedom means. It’s not some entitlement to be an a-hole.

  5. I would seriously get someone to check that this bigot hasnt been “filing” LGTB book titles in a skip somewhere.

    1. Any way to plaster his boss’s picture over the net ? So that at least people recognise a bigot in the streets when they pass him by.

Sorry – please translate “skip” in this usage for us North Americans! What does it mean, other than to purposely miss using another foot while walking?

      1. No idea what it’s called in N America but see the 2nd pic here:

A woman loses her job and livelihood just because she clicked on ‘Like’ on a Facebook Page that his employers do not agree with? This sort of thing wouldn’t happen here in the UK as we enjoy better employment protection than in the US. It is harder for a sacked employee to win a case for unfair dismissal in America but when the reason for his dismissal is as ludicrous as this then there should be no reason why she shouldn’t win her case.

  7. I assume people like that are why the USA doesn’t have anti-discrimination legislation based on sexuality.

As far as I am aware, the US does not offer the same level of protection to LGBT people in the work place that we have here in the UK. This kind of thing would not be allowed to happen here. The US still has a very long way to go and I wish Mr TerVeer all the luck in the world with his lawsuit, I fear he is going to need it.

    Post a reply →
    1. Federal courts in the US have consistently held that governments (as opposed to private companies) cannot discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. The Library of Congress is a government-funded institution. Hence, TerVeer is suing in federal district court. The odds are that he will win.

  9. The Library of Congress has a horrible record re glbt employees. Luckily, a transgender person recently won a lawsuit against them. Inasmuch as gays are very prominent in the field of librarianship, it is really stupid that TerVeer had to face the harassment that he did. Probably since he is a graduate of Hope College, a religious fundamentalist school in Michigan, Mech assumed that he shared his homophobia and then got bent out of shape when he discovered that he was gay.
