The hundreds of millions of viewers who tuned in to view the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony last night witnessed huge images of Freddie Mercury recreating his famous 1985 Live Aid appearance projected onto the main stage.

In the 80,000 capacity stadium, Brian May and Roger Taylor performed We Will Rock you with Mercury as a hologram duetting with Jessie J, whose sexuality was the subject of rumours back in the spring.

Mercury, who died in 1991, already has associations with the Olympics owing to his 1987 song Barcelona, on which he duetted with Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballé. The song later became the official theme for the 1992 Olympic games in the titular city.

Alongside Queen, an array of British pop and rock acts took part in the ceremony including The Pet Shop Boys, Madness, The Who, George Michael, Liam Gallagher’s new band Beady Eye, Muse, Spice Girls, Annie Lennox and Tinie Tempah.
