As if further proof was needed of the pop icon’s complete return to health after last year’s battle with pneumonia, @GeorgeMichael has taken part in the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Looking slender and beaming in front of an estimated global audience of one billion, the Wham! star launched into the track Freedom to rapturous screams of delight from the 80,000-strong sell out crowd at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

Michael was wearing an all black outfit, featuring tight dark jeans and black shades.

This summer has been a busy one for the pop legend. He’s been making a string of high-profile media appearances ahead of resuming his Symphonica European tour in September.

It had to be cancelled last year after Michael became seriously ill with pneumonia in Austria.

The pop icon recently told GaydarRadio that he now has a new found appreciation for life after doctors were forced to perform an emergency tracheotomy, with the star also spending several additional weeks in intensive care.

Along with the Spice Girls, who were previously spotted practising on the top of black taxis; news of Michael’s appearance at the London 2012 closing ceremony has not exactly been kept a secret.

Michael confirmed rumours of his involvement in tonight’s performance last week on Twitter after he said: “Spending most of the next week rehearsing like crazy for the Olympic closing ceremony.

“Obviously a bit nervous not having played for nearly a year, but rehearsals sounding great so far!

“Oh, and secret? It’s been all over the press for weeks, and I think you all needed to be put out of your misery!”
