  1. *Yawn* Boring.

  2. Interesting how everyone seems to have forgotten that Boris compared Gay marriage to marrying a dog.

  3. Can we have a terrible magazine of the year award?

  4. Robert in S. Kensington 1 Aug 2012, 8:50pm

Many would qualify for the bigot of the year award, from Cardinal O’Brien, Bishop Tartaglia, to Anna Minichiello, to name just three. Why not have several?

    1. Sentamu, Rowan Williams, Bishop Wallace Benn, Peter Kearney, Colin Hart, David Skinner???

Anne Widdecome, Nadine Dorries, Melanie Phillips, Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster, the editors of the Daily Mail and Telegraph, the BBC, Lord Maginnis, Gavin Robinson. The list is endless.

    2. Bigot of the Year would be far too flattering for these suggested contenders. The Seriously Dysfunctional Person award might be more appropriate.

    3. Shame there wasn’t ‘A Cry For Help’ competition at the Olympics, otherwise there would be a three-way tie for gold.

  5. I’d be very surprised if Cardinal Keith O’Brien doesn’t win the bigot award this year.

  6. It will be Philip Tartaglia-bishop of Glasgow for those remarks about David Cairns death. Let’s face it- nothing could be worse than that.

  7. Let’s not forget Ken was speaking up for us when no one else was – apart from Peter Tatchell.

Yes, then he got some know friends and he didn’t care if we ate and died.

      1. Staircase2 2 Aug 2012, 1:43am

Sister Mary Clarence – you should be ashamed of yourself…

        What a crock of sh!t!
…you know for a man of the cloth you really do have some really twisted views on reality…

As Tatchell points out, it would be absurd for Livingstone to be nominated for this award. Most that can be said about him is that he is tactless. The same excuse could not be made for Jan Moir, Keith Obrien, Philip Tartaglia,Mario Conti, the rev William Philip or others who have clearly gone out of their way with the express intention of hurting us with their words and actions.

    1. Did any of those people use their official capacity to invite to London a man who says that gay people should be murdered and that killing jews is good? Did any of them compare jews to concentration camp guards? Did any of them help ensure that the mayor of Tower Hamlets should be someone endorsed by a group that seeks the domination of Europe by islam? Livingstone is the consummate opportunist. He has no principles. He was happy to condemn tax avoidance whilst doing so himself.

  9. The Spectator itself must be in the running. Nasty piece of work.

    1. Spanner1960 2 Aug 2012, 7:34pm

That’s funny, considering at least tone of the sub-editors is gay.

  10. Ken Livingstone was gay-friendly in the 1980’s when few other people were.

He has COMPLETELY pissed away this legacy however when he invited genocidal extremist Yusuf Al Qaradawi to a reception (this man calls for death to gay people) and refused point blank to confirm that this genocidal maniac would NOT be welcome in London. He also refiused to condemn his homophobia.

Ken Livingstone also was a paid contributor to Iranian state TV – therefore he was happy to accept money from a state which executes gay people.

    Ken Livingstone is a bigot.

(Then again Ben Summerskill has NEVER been nominated as Bigot of the Year either – he should have been the year he was caught campaigning against marriage equality at the LibDem conference)

  11. If anything, Ken Livingstone deserves a lifetime award recognising his tireless work in supporting the gay community in London from the late 1970s right through to the present. I think that anyone — a Ken supporter or not — can look back at his lengthy record and come to this conclusion.

Of course there are those that will scream about his meeting with Yusuf Al Qaradawi, the Islamist militant, but I see no legitimate reason why agreeing to talk to a known homophobe actually makes him a homophobe himself when his entire record shows him to be one of our greatest allies.

Well done Ken, you’ve been a great defender of the gay community in the past and long may you continue to do so.

    1. He did not just meet with homophobic extremists like Yusuf Al Qaradawi – he point blank REFUSED to condemn his bigotry.

And for the fact that he was willing to profit from Iranian state TV ie he was taking money from a government which kills LGBT people.

He was an ally in the past as you say.

He has since revealed himself to be a slimy opportunist who defends and profits from homophobia.

      He is scum.

  12. Oh dAVID, do shush. Steer your vitriol to the homophobic, self-serving Tory that is Boris Johnson. Not only did he put gay marriage on a par with bestiality, he cut funding to ALL gay causes when he came in as mayor. Yet for some reason, I still know gays who support and vote for him. It’s like a Jew (or a gay) saying, ‘Yeah, but Hitler is kinda charming, so he deserves my vote!’

    1. Has Johnson ever met and welcomed people who want to kill us?

Has Johnson ever taken money from a genocidally homophobic government?

Ken Livingstone has pissed his own legacy away.

      He deserves nothing but condemnation.

      1. Dan Filson 2 Aug 2012, 5:10pm

Possibly not, but he chums up to Rupert Murdoch, even after his disgrace, which is even worse given the Murdoch press track record.

  13. What is Stonewall’s procedure for nominating Bigot of the Year? Is the procedure transparent, or is it simply down to Ben Summerskill personal decision?

BTW anyone else notice that Stonewall advertises on GayStarNews but not on Pink News?

    1. Dan Filson 2 Aug 2012, 5:11pm

Any idea that Stonewall is a one man band is just so misguided.

      1. Spanner1960 2 Aug 2012, 7:36pm

Nevertheless, they still act as if they were.

  14. Bring it on – if I were Ken I would attend the awards, and give a “winner’s” speech about how my actions had done probably more then any other UK politician to improve things for LGBT people. Then I’d tell Stonewall to go **** themselves.

The homophobe was in fact Ben Summerskill who witnessed a police car being driven at speed into gays cruising Holland Park Walk and refused to make a complaint- he told me he was having sex at the time, but didn’t want to “ruin his career” by making a complait: I was on two policing committees pursuing the matter. Livingstone, on the other had funded the London Lesbian and Gay Centre, but its problem was an unworkable committee of 22 who had NO knowledge of how to run a bar or club, which is what it fundamentally was, and allowed HUGE stock losses- an own goal by our community. Summerskill’s arrogance and racism was witnessed by me at Pink Paper, when he humiliated and persecuted a Thai lesbian.
