New Hampshire speaker wants another attempt to ban equal marriage
New Hampshire’s House speaker has said that he will launch a second attempt to ban equal marriage if he wins another term.
Speaking on New Hampshire Public Radio’s the Exchange, Bill O’Brien claimed that allowing gay couples to marry weakens families, which in turn causes the government to spend more money fixing social problems.
He said: “If our families are weak, then we’ll never be able to have final fiscal responsibility, because if government needs to step up for weakened families then there’s going to be an unlimited call on government resources.
“One of the things that makes our families strong is a traditional definition of marriage and I firmly believe that.”
New Hampshire has had marriage equality since January 2010. There have been several unsuccessful efforts to repeal the law.
