Stonewall has been confirmed as the main sponsor of UK Black Pride this year, the biggest celebration of African, Asian, Caribbean and Arab LGBT people in Europe.

The community event, which began in 2005 as a black lesbian and bisexual outing to Southend-on-Sea, will have the theme ‘Together we are strong’ this year.

The seventh event will move from Regents Park to the Ministry of Sound in south London.

Phyllis Opoku-Gyimah, UK Black Pride Director, said: “We’re thrilled that Stonewall is continuing its amazing support for our community-led event. The technical and financial help Stonewall has gifted us will to ensure that we put on a strong event to focus on the specific needs of African, Asian, Caribbean and Arab LGBT people as well as to celebrate our many achievements. UK Black Pride is an inclusive event for all people. I encourage everyone to join this Pride celebration!”

Laura Doughty, Stonewall Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Stonewall is delighted to once again support UK Black Pride as its main sponsor. Research we will be publishing at UK Black Pride shows that BME people who are gay all too often face increased difficulties when accessing Britain’s public services.

“This country is rightly seen worldwide as a beacon for equality, which is why events like UK Black Pride – which celebrate diversity and showcase role models for young people – continue to be so important.”

The seventh UK Black Pride festival will take place on Saturday 18 August at the Ministry of Sound, London and will only be open to over-18s.

Previous headline acts have included Jessie J, Ms Dynamite and Beverley Knight.

Four licensed bars, a cocktail bar, VIP area, world food, education and welfare workshops as well as community stalls will sit alongside the main stage..

Tickets cost £10 each and can be bought from www.ukblackpride.org.uk.
